Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 26 August - 01 September 2019

Solar activity was at very low levels. New Region 2748 (N14, L=205, class/area Bxo/010 on 01 Sep) emerged on the disk, but remained quiet and stable. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at moderate levels on 26 Aug, normal levels on 27-30 Aug, high levels on 31 Aug and very high levels on 01 Sep. Electron flux reached a maximum of 53,007 pfu at 01/2015 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to unsettled levels on 26-27 Aug due to influence from a weak, negative polarity CH HSS. Quiet conditions persisted from late on 27 Aug through midday on 30 Aug. From midday on 30 Aug through 01 Sep, field activity increased to unsettled to G1 (minor) and G2 (moderate) levels as Earth came under the influence of a large, recurrent positive polarity CH HSS. 30 Aug saw a SSBC from a negative to a positive sector in advance of a CIR, all preceding the CH HSS. 31 Aug and 01 Sep observed active to G1 and G2 storm conditions. Wind speeds averaged about 750 km/s during this time frame with a peak of 835 km/s observed early on 01 September.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 02 September - 28 September 2019

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at high to very high levels on 02-13 Sep and again on 27-28 Sep. Normal to moderate levels are expected on 14-26 Sep.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at G1 (minor) storm 27-28 Sep due to positive polarity CH HSS influence. Unsettled levels are expected on 03, 07-08, 23, and 26 Sep due to recurrent CH
HSS effects.

Robert Bankston, KE4AL, VP-User Services announced the appointment of
Mark D. Johns, KØJM, as Editor-in-Chief of the AMSAT News Service.

Johns, currently serving as a rotating ANS weekly editor, steps up to
replace EMike McCardel, AA8EM, who is facing a long recovery follow-
ing a serious injury while clearing storm damage at his home in early
August.

Mark Johns is Professor Emeritus, Journalism and Communication Stud-
ies, of Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, but now resides in the Minne-
apolis, Minn. area. He is a life member of ARRL and AMSAT, holds a
DXCC Satelite certificate, and is a member of the Minnesota Wireless
Association and the Twin Cities DX Association (TCDXA). Mark is also
on the editorial staff of the Gray Line Report, the newsletter of
the TCDXA.

Mark grew up in Des Moines, Iowa and was first licensed there in 1967

Emergency Traffic Relayed over AO-92 Satellite

On August 27, 2019, Clayton, W5PFG, and his father Jack, AC5DI, were
traversing the Chihuahuan Desert in Big Bend National Park, Texas,
USA, when their vehicle became stuck in mud from recent monsoon rains.

Being stuck up to the axles, they were unable to self-recover from
the situation, requiring assistance from Park Rangers. August temper-
atures in this desert reach upwards of 110-115 degrees Fahrenheit.
There is no mobile phone coverage outside park headquarters.

Clayton made contact via AMSAT satellite AO-92 with Kevin, KK4YEL,
in Florida. During the satellite pass, stations stood by while Clayton
relayed emergency traffic to Kevin. This information included details
about the situation including precise latitude and longitude, the
phone number for Big Bend National Park, vehicle description, and wel-
fare of the party.

Other stations listening to the pass including Brian, KG5GJT, contacted
the park headquarters. Within two hours, Park Rangers arrived on scene
and recovered the stuck vehicle. No person was injured, and no equipment
was damaged.

Clayton and Jack were traveling to DL88jx, a maidenhead grid square high-
ly sought after by many ARRL VUCC members. Clayton had previously made
two successful trips to DL88jx. Both Clayton and Jack are very grateful
to Kevin, KK4YEL, the responsiveness of the amateur radio community,
and to the Park Rangers and staff of Big Bend National Park.

Incident discussion via Twitter quickly provided recordings of the
AO-92 satellite traffic:

University of Tsukuba YUI Satellite Project D-ATV User Survey

Takehiro Okamoto, student leader of University of Tsukuba YUI project
in Japan, reports his team is developing a 2U cubesat planned to fea-
ture real-time video transmission from space as the main mission. This
project, wants the general public to view and use the images, and are
soliciting user opinions.

They plan to downlink D-ATV from the 2U CubeSat, similar to HamTV
from the ISS. Complete the survey posted at:

AMSAT SA Dual Band Yagi Now Available for Export

AMSAT South Africa (AMSAT SA) has developed a dual-band Yagi VHF/UHF
antenna for satellite operation. The antenna has a 50-ohm designed
driver. The Yagi has a unique element called a 'Open Sleeve' which
is a director very close to the driven element. The driven element
is sized for 2M.  When operating on 70cm the 'Open Sleeve' acts as
part of the driven element on 70cm (Third harmonic of 2M).

The original concept was developed in 1946 by Dr J T Bolljahn of the
Stanford Research institute but was not introduced into amateur radio
until the 1950s. The AMSAT SA version is based on a design by DK7ZB
with modifications by WB5CXC.

Until recently this antenna was available only in South Africa. Fol-
lowing requests from many amateurs outside South Africa AMSAT SA can
offer the Yagi for export if ordered in a batch of 6, at R950 each
(approx US $65), total for a batch of 6 is R5700. (approx US $ 390)
to countries in the European Union and the USA. For Australia and New
Zealand R1000 per unit in a batch of 6 total RR6000. Pricing for
other countries on request.

German CEPT Response States Sharing of 144-146 MHz Not Realistic

Update: The ARRL reported on August 30, 2019 -
144 – 146 MHz Removed from French Proposal for Additional Aero-
nautical Applications: https://tinyurl.com/ANS-244-ARRL-2M-Removed

The latest development regarding the proposal to share 144-146 MHz
comes from Germany.

They state, "Germany does not support the inclusion of the 144-146 MHz
primary allocated to the amateur service/amateur satellite service in
the proposed WRC-23 agenda item regarding a possible new allocation to
the aeronautical mobile service (AMS) for non-safety applications.

Consequently, Germany cannot determine a single realistic sharing scen-
ario, not leading to serious mutual interference on both sides and not
seriously degrading the use of the 144-146 MHz band."

+ Photos posted-- Motorola Special Event Station Celebrating "One

Apollo 11 went off without a hitch as we had a very good turn out
of club members rotating the support of operations of one radio
operator and one logger from 8am Saturday till noon Sunday. A little
over 400 contacts were made including some that were engineers work-
ing for other contractors on the Apollo program, current and former

the event was the re-transmission of the audio of the lunar landing
exactly 50 years later.  We asked for a pause in on-air traffic and

CQ NEWS (Eddie DeYoung, AE7AA, Named CQ Magazine Awards Editor). A press
release, dated August 29th, from Richard Moseson (W2VU), Editor of CQ
Amateur Radio, reports the following: Eddie De Young, AE7AA, of Clearwater,
Florida, has been named Awards Editor of CQ Amateur Radio magazine, Editor
Rich Moseson, W2VU, announced today. His first Awards column appears in
the September 2019 issue. De Young succeeds Ted Melinosky, K1BV, who was
both Awards Editor and USA-Counties Award Custodian for more than 20 years.
CQ previously announced the appointment of Brian Bird, NX0X, as the new
USA-CA custodian.
De Young has been licensed since 1954 and has, over the years, held more
than two dozen call signs from 11 different countries. He spent 38 years
in the Pacific, Asia and Antarctica, including many in Australia. While
there, he served as Awards Manager for the Wireless Institute of Australia,
where he helped modernize the program and developed software to improve
award processing. He has also been on nearly a dozen DXpeditions.
Since returning to the United States, Eddie has worked summers for the
National Park Service as a park ranger at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
and at Glacier National Park in Montana. On the ham bands, he is active
via remote stations and with limited operation from his new apartment,
with 100 watts and a homemade fractal square loop on his balcony. Eddie
enjoys operating primarily CW and digital modes.
De Young says he plans to offer hints in his column on earning CQ awards
of all kinds, inform newbies how to get started on their award hunting
quests and share how much fun and educational award-chasing can be. Eddie
also says he plans to include occasional competitions, award nostalgia
and ideas from readers.
CQ Editor Rich Moseson said, "Eddie brings a world of experience from
all over the world to this position. As an avid award chaser as well as
someone who has 'been the DX,' he understands both sides of the award-
hunting equation and is uniquely qualified to help CQ's readers achieve
the greatest possible success in their own award-hunting efforts. Plus,
as former awards manager for a national association, he understands the
administrative side of award programs as well. I look forward to working
with Eddie."

D4, CAPE VERDE. David, CT1EKU, is once again active as D44CH from Sal
Island (AF-086) until September 5th. Activity will be on various HF
bands using SSB and the Digital modes (FT8). QSL via LoTW, ClubLog and

SPECIAL EVENT (Highway to a DX Party!). The Citrus Belt Amateur Radio
Club of San Bernardino , California, is once again hosting
(probably one of the most fun special event activities) the 20th annual
"Route 66 On The Air" special event between September 7-15th. The purpose
of this event is to offer amateur radio operators a fun way to "Relive
the Ride" of their own memories of Route 66, and to celebrate the highway's
93rd anniversary. The U.S. Highway 66 established in 1926, was the first
major improved highway to link the west coast with the nation's heartland.
Through stories, songs, and TV shows, the highway came to symbolize the
spirit of the freedom of the open road, inspiring many to see America.
Look for the following 20 stations (two are rovers) operating in or around
the major cities along the old "Route 66" from Santa Monica, California,
to Chicago, Illinois:
   Stations       City                   Clubs/Individuals
   --------      --------------------   -------------------------
W6A         Santa Monica, CA       Westside Amateur Radio Club

following frequencies. (Look for digital modes in the standard band segments
for such mode) All frequencies +/- QRM:
  CW  - 3533, 7033, 10110, 14033, 18080, 21033, 24900, 28033 and 50033 kHz

R66 MOBILE Operations - Any amateurs operating while actually driving
along Route 66 during the special event period are encouraged to
take part in "Route 66 On The Air", by using the designation
"mobile 66" for SSB or "/m66" for CW after their callsigns. All
other amateur radio operators are welcome to contact these mobile
operators. NOTE: ONLY W6S AND W6T ARE ONLY THE OFFICIAL EVENT
ROVER/MOBILE STATIONS AND WILL BE ENDORSED ON THE EVENT CERTIFICATE.

REPEATERS - Some of the participating clubs will also be operating this
event from their local VHF/UHF repeaters. Check the ARRL repeater
guide for possible repeater frequencies, if you're in the local

For Immediate Release
Press Release #6 [edited]
September 1, 2019
South Orkney Islands DX-pedition
VP8/VP8DXU
(AN-008)

Corporate Sponsors -- We are delighted to announce that Low Band Systems
will supply their High-Power Bandpass Filters for all planned bands. This
complement of best in class filters, in conjunction with vertical and
horizontal polarized antennas, will allow us to operate two stations on
the same band simultaneously and improve overall inter-station operability.

DX-peditions to the Southern Ocean are challenged by high winds which
may result in downed antennas unless adequately guyed. Joining our corporate
sponsors are Mastrant Antenna Guying and Clamcleat Limited. We?ll use a
selection of their antenna support products to keep the masts in the air.
We appreciate the confidence these new sponsors have in our project and
team.

Project Major Milestones -- During the week of October 20th team members
will meet near Palo Alto, California to consolidate, integrate, test and
pack the equipment for its transport to Punta Arenas, Chile. Arrangements
were made for our customs broker to transport the tents and all other
equipment to their depot where a container will be prepared for the
journey.

The team began making their travel arrangements to meet the Braveheart
in Chile. At their own expense airline reservations are being booked,
and a Punta Arenas hotel will house the team.

Braveheart left New Zealand on August 20th to meet her contractual
obligations in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, including VP6R Pitcairn
Island DX-pedition, first stop Papeete, French Polynesia. She will return
home sometime in April, 2020.

Fundraising -- The inconvenient truth is amateur radio DX-peditions to
the Southern Ocean, and other rare entities that require a ship charter,
are expensive. While the team members will shoulder much of the cost of
the project, we depend on corporate sponsors, clubs/foundations and
individuals to share the cost. Ham radio is our hobby, businesses require
full payment for their services.

To date, 37 clubs / foundations and over 300 individuals have shown
their support for the project. With 6 months before sailing we are at
48% of our fundraising goal.

A subsequent DX-pedition to South Orkney Island will likely not take
place for a long time. If you need South Orkney for an ATNO, band fills,
or plan to play in the pileups, we would appreciate your help before we
sail.

Ham Radio Events -- With the project still in the planning stage, we?ve
agreed to participate at the following events:

  -     Ham Radio (June, 2020) Friedrichshafen, Germany
  -     Asia Pacific DX Convention (November, 2020) Osaka, Japan

In closing, we?ve been in contact with Silvano, I2YSB, of the Italian
DX Team. Their recently announced DX-pedition to Tanzania will not overlap
our South Orkney project. Good luck to Silvano and his team.
