Amateur Satellite Corporation.  ANS publishes news related to Amateur

ARISS Responds to the COVID-19 Pandemic

In light of the recent COVID-19 pandemic, the ARISS team is working
to transform its activities for the health and safety of our
students, host educational institutions and its team.  It has
instituted an immediate response effort followed by a more strategic,
longer term initiative to protect all.  ARISS leadership, working
with a physician on the team, is carefully reviewing all of its
procedures in light of the evolving COVID-19 recommendation. ARISS
will continue to monitor the local and global situations and will
modify its local and global planning as these situations change.

ARISS has two primary initiatives underway.  One is to develop
“virtual school” contacts to link each student in their home through
its telebridge stations.  The other is to plan SSTV (picture
downlink) sessions during which pictures from ISS can be received by
all in their homes.

New TQSL Version Provides Better LoTW Rover Support

The latest version of TrustedQSL (TQSL), version 2.5.2, offers
improved Logbook of The World (LoTW) support for operations from
several locations, as well as the ability to detect uploads that
contain incorrect location data.

The primary new feature in TQSL 2.5.2 allows logging programs, in
conjunction with TQSL, to avoid incorrect contact uploads, while
adding mechanisms to allow easy uploading of logs for roving
stations. LoTW had required rovers to identify each location used
as a separate location in TQSL. The new version of TQSL allows these
operations to be handled much more smoothly by using information from
the station’s logging program.

When a log is signed by TQSL, the station details — call Sign, DXCC
entity, grid square, and other location details provided by the
selected station location (and call sign certificate) — are compared
with the details in the log. If the US state and station location in
a log do not agree, TQSL 2.5.2 will reject the contact, detecting
errors in instances when an incorrect station location has been
chosen.

This feature will necessitate changes in many logging programs,
because it requires that the log provide station details previously
not used by TQSL. Once a logging program supplies these (MY_STATE,
MY_DXCC, MY_CQ_ZONE, etc.), then TQSL will validate them against the
log. Currently, Cabrillo logs use the CALLSIGN field to verify that
the contacts are for the correct call sign.

Optionally, a station performing roaming operations (e.g., from
multiple grid squares) can choose to have TQSL assume that the log is
correct. When call sign or home station are provided with the log,
TQSL will automatically update the details on the upload. Select
“Override Station Location with QTH Details from your Log” on the
“Log Handling” preference page to enable this feature.

This release also includes an update to the most recent TQSL
configuration file.

AMSAT-EA Registering SanoSat-1 for AMSAT Nepal

The Union of Spanish Amateur Radio Operators' satellite group,
AMSAT-EA, is registering with IARU and the ITU the AMSAT Nepal
satellite SanoSat-1.  This is being done due to the difficulty of
carrying out this procedure in the Asian country. This is a one-off
collaboration which will allow said satellite to fly under the
Spanish flag.  It should be launched jointly with the AMSAT-EA
EASAT-2 and Hades satellites possibly with SpaceX later this year.

SanoSat-1 is a 5cm/side pocketQube 1P designed and developed
affordably for the hobbyist community by using readily available
commercial of-the-shelf components (COTS).

The SanoSat-1 satellite integrates a gamma radiation sensor as a
payload. Its main mission will be to measure space radiation while
orbiting, and periodically transmit its level to Earth using RTTY-FSK
modulation. All radio amateurs will be able to receive and decode
radiation measurement data.

The secondary mission of the SanoSat-1 satellite is also to
demonstrate the storage and forwarding concept which will be useful
in remote disaster-prone locations. The satellite will collect
data from ground sensors, store it on board and transmit it to
Earth's main station. The design and kit for the ground sensors will
be made available to the general public.

One of AMSAT Nepal's goals is to encourage more people to join the
group of radio amateurs by receiving data from SanoSat-1 which will
also transmit a CW beacon with its internal status.

Another activity scheduled to promote radio amateurs and satellite
technology to science and technology students around the world is the
organization of hands-on workshops on the construction of
pico-satellites and ground stations. There will be an opportunity to
build an affordable open source ground station (SatNOGS) and a
dedicated GFSK receiver ground station to receive the data.  The
design of the satellite itself will be open source as well.

ESA and LibreSpace Report: SDR's for Small Satellites

The European Space Agency Libre Space Foundation has published a
paper comparing many common software defined radios (SDR's). The
devices they examined are:

- RTS-SDR v3
- Airspy Mini
- SDRPlay RSPduo
- LimeSDR Mini
- BladeRF 2.0 Micro
- Ettus USRP B210
- Pluto SDR

The report looked at several bands of interest, but not the HF bands
— not surprising considering that some of the devices can’t even
operate on HF. They did examine VHF, UHF, L band, S band, and C band
performance. Some of the SDR's have transmit capabilities, and for
those devices, they tested the transmit function as well as receive.

The review isn’t just subjective. It calculates noise figures and
dynamic range, along with other technical parameters. It also
includes GNURadio flowgraphs for their test setups, which would be a
place to start if one wanted to do these kinds of measurements
oneself.

Towards the end of the 134 page report is an assessment of SDR
software and how the boards are supported. There was no clear winner
or loser although the report did mention how SDRPlay’s closed source
limited software support in some applications.

Brazil Holds 430 and 1240 MHz Hearing

A public hearing is being held in Brazil concerning both the 430 MHz
and the 1240 MHz Amateur Radio bands.

On March 23, 2020 the National Telecommunications Agency, ANATEL,
published a Public Consultation proposal number 14/2020 on technical
and operational requirements for the use of the frequency bands from
430 MHz to 440 MHz and from 1240 MHz to 1300 MHz by stations of the
Private Limited Service (SLP) for radiolocation applications.

The national amateur radio society LABRE says “The Radio Amateur
community is concerned about the possible occurrence of interference,
especially in the 70 cm band.”

Shorts from All Over

+ Fresh ISS Crew Arrives

NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy, KF5KDR, and two Russian cosmonauts
arrived Thursday for their mission aboard the International Space
Station, temporarily restoring the orbiting laboratory?s population
to six people. The Soyuz MS-16 spacecraft carrying Cassidy, along
with Anatoly Ivanishin and Ivan Vagner of the Russian space agency
Roscosmos, docked to the station's Poisk service module at 10:13 A.M.
after a four-orbit, six-hour flight. Their Soyuz spacecraft launched
at 4:05 A.M. EDT (0805Z, or 1:05 P.M. Kazakhstan time) from the
Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

+ First Transatlantic Contact on 70 Centimeters Reported

History appears to have been made on April 7, when AMSAT member
Burt Demarcq, FG8OJ and an operator at
D4VHF in Cape Verde off the African Coast and , on
Guadeloupe in the Caribbean completed a contact on 70 centimeters
using FT8 — a distance of 3,867 kilometers (2,398 miles). This would
mark the first transatlantic contact on that band that did not
involve satellites or moonbounce. The most likely mode of propagation
was marine ducting, with the signal being trapped close to the ocean
surface.

One day earlier, 9Y4D in Trinidad copied D4VHF over a distance of
4,006 kilometers (2,484 miles), but no contact was made. D4VHF is the
VHF-UHF contest call sign of the Monteverde Contest Team (D4C).

Perhaps not coincidentally, FG8OJ was the first to span the Atlantic
on 2 meters over the same path, when he worked D41CV in Cape Verde on
June 16, 2019.

AMSAT Space Symposium Call for Papers

AMSAT has issued a call for papers for the 50th Anniversary AMSAT An-
nual Meeting and Space Symposium to be held on the weekend of October
18 – 20 at The Hilton Arlington, 950 North Stafford Street, Arlington,
Virginia. Proposals for papers, symposium presentations, and poster
presentations are invited on any topic of interest to the amateur
satellite community. We request a tentative title of your presentation
as soon as possible, with final copy to be submitted by September 23
for inclusion in the printed proceedings. Abstracts and papers should

FCC Dismisses ARRL, AMSAT Requests in Small Satellite Proceeding

An FCC Report and Order (R&O) released August 2 in the so-called
“small satellite” rulemaking proceeding, IB Docket 18-86, failed to
address concerns expressed by ARRL and AMSAT. Both organizations filed
comments on the FCC Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) in the pro-
ceeding last year, seeking changes in the FCCs interpretations and
procedures affecting satellites operating on Amateur Satellite Service
frequencies.

“These comments address topics outside the scope of this proceeding,
and we decline to adopt any of the requested rule modifications or up-
dates at this time,” the FCC said in the R&O. The FCC did mention
amateur satellites in its 2018 NPRM, explaining what they are and
describing the documentation and authorization process, but it did not
solicit comments.

“The Commission did not seek comment in the NPRM on any modifications
or updates to the rules governing Experimental or amateur satellite
licensing. The streamlined Part 25 small satellite process adopted in
the Order is an alternative to existing license processes and does not
replace or modify the authorization procedures for satellites current-
ly contained in Parts 5, 25, or 97 of the Commission’s rules,” the FCC
explained. “Nevertheless, we received a number of comments in response
to the NPRM, particularly regarding the rules applicable to amateur
satellite operations, suggesting that aspects of those rules be im-
proved or clarified.”

In its 2018 NPRM, the FCC had said, “Because the type of operations
that qualify as amateur [is] narrowly defined, an amateur satellite
authorization will not be appropriate for many small satellite opera-
tions.”

In its 2018 comments, ARRL said it wanted the FCC to preclude exploi-
tation of amateur spectrum by commercial small-satellite users author-
ized under Part 5 Experimental rules and suggested that the FCC adopt
a “a bright line test” to define and distinguish satellites that
should be permitted to operate under Amateur Satellite rules.

ARRL’s position was to support and encourage college and university
Amateur Radio experiments where the sponsor of the experiment is a
licensed radio amateur and all operation in amateur spectrum is com-
pliant with Part 97. Part 5 Experimental authorizations for satellites
intended to operate in amateur allocations by non-amateur sponsors
should be discouraged, absent a compelling show of need, ARRL told the
FCC.

The International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) announced in 2017 that it
would no longer coordinate non-amateur satellite operations unless
directed to do so by the national administration, and it adopted new
satellite frequency coordination guidelines that require educational
and university satellites to have an identified amateur component.
AMSAT’s comments reflected many of the same concerns that ARRL had
expressed.

SpaceTrack is not showing the correct NORAD CAT ID for Raavana-1,
Uguisu, and NepaliSat-1. The NORAD CAT ID for the following Amateur
Radio satellites has been corrected as follows:

50th Anniversary AMSAT Space Symposium Banquet Speakers Announced

Tickets are now available for the AMSAT Symposium Saturday Evening
Banquet on Saturday, Oct. 19 will feature a panel of guest speakers
presenting “The Foundations of AMSAT” followed by a question and
answer period. Guest speakers will include:

Dr. Perry Klein, W3PK (Founding President of AMSAT)

at The Hilton Arlington. Symposium registration is available for $60

Tickets are also available for the Sunday tour. On Sunday, Oct. 20,
a bus tour will take attendees to the the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center,
an annex of the National Air and Space Museum. Two large hangars dis-
play thousands of aviation and space artifacts, including a Lockheed
SR-71 Blackbird, a Concorde, and the Space Shuttle Discovery. Bus
capacity is limited to 35 attendees. Tickets are $30 per person.
Attendees who wish to drive may also join the tour group. Parking at
the Udvar-Hazy Center is $15.

On Monday, Oct. 21, AMSAT President Joe Spier, K6WAO, will lead a
walking tour of the National Mall. No reservations are required.
Transportation to the National Mall will be via the Washington Metro.

    AMSAT and ARISS are currently supporting a FundRazr campaign

PSAT2 Downlink for DTMF Grids and Messages

Thanks to Robert, KE6BLR, amateurs can now capture the DTMF Grids and
Messages data coming down from PSAT2. A DTMF page has been added to
the list of links for PSAT2: http://aprs.org/sats.html

Summary: You encode your Grid and callsign into a 16 digit DTMF memory
on your radio. Using narrow band FM, send it on 145.98 with doppler
compensation or at the middle of a pass.

PSAT2 assigns a CQ number and acknowledges it by voice and then sends
an APRS packet that contains the grid. Robert's web page will capture
that packet.

A second station can send their DTMF grid and get the same process but
with a new CQ number.

Now, either station can send a DTMF QSL Message for the other guy's CQ
number which will also be spoken and recorded on the APRS downlink.

PSAT2 is entering a phase of Apogee in the northern hemisphere for a
week or so, and so is more workable in the USA and southern Europe.

wave Update conference. At this time, The North Texas Microwave Socie-
ty is soliciting additional papers for the proceedings. It is not
necessary to be a presenter at the conference to have an article pub-
lished in the proceedings. Papers must be emailed to Kent Britain,
WA5VJB, at wa5vjb@flash.net, by August 31 as they will be submitted to
the League for printing the week of Sept 3. Please also copy Al Ward,

Chinese Satellite Profiles RF Spectrum as Seen from Lunar Orbit

The Chinese DSLWP-B (LO-94) satellite that had been in lunar orbit
provided a profile of Earth’s HF spectrum as seen from the moon. The
microsatellite subsequently was crashed into the moon’s surface after
having completed its mission. DSLWP stands for “Discovering the Sky at
Longest Wavelengths Pathfinder.” Among other things, DSLWP-B was de-
signed to test low-frequency radio astronomy and space-based interfer-
ometry, and it carried Amateur Radio and educational payloads.

The HF spectrum mission included mapping “RF interference” from Earth
in the 1 – 30 MHz range by studying its occlusion by the moon during
lunar orbit. According to Chinese media accounts, this was done to
“verify the technology of ultra-long wave astronomical observation and
solar radiation research.” The onboard detector sensed the spectrum of
RF radiation at different positions of the lunar orbit.

The Harbin Institute of Technology (BY2HIT) developed and built the
DSLWP spacecraft and oversaw the mission. The microsatellite also
carried optical cameras from Saudi Arabia.

In July, a contact between radio amateurs in Germany and China took
place on July 1 via LO-94. The two-way exchange was between Reinhard
Kuehn, DK5LA, in Sörup, Germany, and Harbin Institute of Technology
club station BY2HIT (operated by Wei Mingchuan, BG2BHC), in Harbin,
China, via the onboard GMSK-to-JT4G repeater — the first such contact
ever made.

Space Shuttle Discovery.  Bus capacity is limited to 35 attendees.
Tickets are $30 per person.  Attendees who wish to drive may also
join the tour group. Parking at the Udvar-Hazy Center is $15.

On Monday, October 21st, AMSAT President Joe Spier, K6WAO, will lead
a walking tour of the National Mall. No reservations are required.

FUNcube-1/AO-73 Entering Continuous Sunlight

FUNCube-1/AO-73 is due to enter continuous sunlight in a few days
time and the operations team have decided to set the satellite to the
education mode full time.  This means full power beacon with no
transponder and no eclipse auto switching. 

One of the effects of this is that the temperature of the satellite
will increase.  This will allow the FUNcube operations team to
follow the effects of continuous sunlight more easily and, in theory,
should keep the satellite cooler as more energy should be radiated
from the structure as RF.

They predict that the satellite will start experiencing eclipses
again on approximately 7 May 2020.  The team may put the satellite
back into transponder mode while it is in continuous sunlight, and
will make an announcement if they do so.

The ARRL/TAPR Digital Communications Conference (DCC) will be held in
Detroit, Michigan September 20-22, 2019.  The location will be
located near the airport.

Technical Presentations & Papers are solicited for presentation at
the DCC and for publication in the Annual Conference Proceedings. 
The proceedings are published by the ARRL.  Submitting a paper is not
required to make a presentation at the conference.  Conversely, it is
not necessary that a  technical paper be presented at the DCC to be
published in the annual proceedings.

BRICSAT2 and PSAT2 Get OSCAR Designations

On June 25, 2019, the United States Naval Academy PSAT2 and BRICSAT2
cubesats were launched on a Falcon Heavy launch vehicle from the
Kennedy Space Center in Florida. PSAT2 and BRICSAT2 were developed by
Naval Academy students in the USNA Satellite Lab and operated in
cooperation with the USNA Amateur Radio Club. PSAT2 carries a PSK31
transponder, digipeater, SSTV-downlinked camera images, and a DTMF to
voice/APRS system. BRICSAT2 carries a digipeater and thruster
experiment. Both satellites are currently active.

At the request of the Naval Academy Amateur Radio Club, AMSAT hereby
designates BRICSAT2 as Navy-OSCAR 103 (NO-103), and PSAT2 as
Navy-OSCAR 104 (NO-104). AMSAT congratulates the owners and operators,

thank them for their contribution to the amateur satellite community,
and wish them a long mission and continued success on this and future
projects.

19th Global Symposium for Regulators

Small-Satellites, High Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS) and 47 GHz
were among the topics discussed at the ITU-D 19th Global Symposium
for Regulators in Port Vila, Vanuata, July 9-12.

The background paper 'Preparing for WRC-19   Understanding the issues
at stake and the impact of decisions to be made' was among the
meeting documents in which 47.0-47.2 GHz is noted as one of the
candidate bands for IMT-2020 (International Mobile Telecommunications)

and 47.2-47.5 GHz for HAPS.

Regarding Small-Satellites the document says:

"At WRC-15, a proposal for a new agenda item for WRC-19  to consider
modifications to the regulatory procedures for notifying satellite
networks to accommodate nanosatellite and picosatellite missions  was
submitted. WRC-15 decided not to include this as a specific item on
the WRC-19 agenda, because it concluded that this matter could best
be dealt with by the ITU-R under the standing WRC agenda item 7.

"Considering that the size of a satellite is independent of the nature

of the service that it is intended to provide, a simplified
regulatory regime needs to be developed for non-GSO satellites with
short-duration missions, independent of the size of the satellite.

"and

"Furthermore, it is important to ensure that any satellite radio-
frequency operation avoids harmful interference to incumbent and
authorized systems and services. The two frequency bands below 1 GHz
under consideration for new or upgraded allocation to the SOS
(150.05-174 MHz and 400.15-420 MHz) are used for a wide variety of
terrestrial and space applications, including for safety of life
purposes, and some of these bands are heavily used on a consistent
basis. Nevertheless, if new allocations to the SOS in these frequency
bands are considered, they should not put undue constraints on any
incumbent services."

SSA Defends 23cm Band Against Galileo Threat

Sweden's national amateur radio society, the SSA, has sent a
supplementary letter to the communications regulator PTS ahead of the
next meeting of the CEPT ECC Conference Preparatory Group CPG-19.

The SSA report:

At a previous CEPT meeting (PTA), France has proposed an agenda item
to WRC-23 that the coexistence between satellite navigation
(e.g., Galileo) and amateur radio in the band 1240-1300 MHz should be
investigated. The proposal was voted down at the preparatory PTA
meeting, but France has now sent letters to the various
telecommunications authorities with a request that they now support
this proposal at the forthcoming CPG19-9. SSA opposes this.

SSA has therefore sent a supplementary letter to PTS about our 23 cm
amateur band. Our section leader for IARU and VUSHF Mats SM6EAN
explains the background and our opinion on our section pages. Here

+ OSCAR-94 Crashes on the Moon

Lunar-OSCAR 94 (a.k.a. LongJiang 2 and DSLWP-B) crashed onto the
far side of the Moon on July 31 around 14:08 UTC, ending its very
successful amateur radio mission around the Moon.  Launched on
May 20, 2018, OSCAR achieved several historical firsts.  The

+ AMSAT-DL Building Antarctic Ground Station for QO-100

AMSAT-DL is hurriedly building a ground station for Antarctica that
will link to QO-100.  The purpose for the installation is to provide
a scientific platform to engage students in studying climate change
and its effects in the polar regions.

US ARISS Proposal Window Remains Open Through April 15, 2017

Message to US Educators Amateur Radio on the International Space Station Contact Opportunity

Call for Proposals
Proposal Window February 15 – April 15, 2017

The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Program is seeking formal and informal education institutions and organizations, individually or working together, to host an Amateur Radio contact with a crew member on board the ISS.  ARISS anticipates that the contact would be held between January 1, 2018 and June 30, 2018. Crew scheduling and ISS orbits will determine the exact contact dates. To maximize these radio contact opportunities, ARISS is
looking for organizations that will draw large numbers of participants and integrate the contact into a well-developed education plan.

The deadline to submit a proposal is April 15, 2017.  Proposal information and documents can be found at www.arrl.org/hosting-an-ariss-contact.

The Opportunity
Crew members aboard the International Space Station will participate in scheduled Amateur Radio contacts. These radio contacts are approximately 10 minutes in length and allow students to interact
with the astronauts through a question-and-answer session.

An ARISS contact is a voice-only communication opportunity via Amateur Radio between astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the space station and classrooms and communities. ARISS contacts afford
education audiences the opportunity to learn firsthand from astronauts what it is like to live and work in space and to learn about space research conducted on the ISS. Students also will have an
opportunity to learn about satellite communication, wireless technology, and radio science. Because of the nature of human spaceflight and the complexity of scheduling activities aboard the
ISS, organizations must demonstrate flexibility to accommodate changes in dates and times of the radio contact.

Amateur Radio organizations around the world, NASA, and space agencies in Russia, Canada, Japan and Europe sponsor this educational opportunity by providing the equipment and operational support to enable direct communication between crew on the ISS and students around the world via Amateur Radio. In the US, the program is managed by AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) and ARRL (American Radio Relay League) in partnership with NASA and CASIS (Center for the Advancement of Science in Space).

Frank Bauer, KA3HDO, 2017 Dayton Hamvention Amateur of the Year

The Dayton Hamvention has announced the winners of the 2017 Hamvention Awards. Each year, the Dayton Hamvention honors radio amateurs who have made major contributions to the art and science of amateur radio. AMSAT Vice President for Human Spaceflight Frank Bauer, KA3HDO, was named 2017 Amateur of the Year.

The award citation reads:

“Frank serves as the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) international chairman. In the mid-1990s, Bauer proposed a GPS reception experiment on the AMSAT Phase 3D satellite (AO-40). The experiment was to measure the signal strength of the GPS satellite constellation while Phase 3D was in high-Earth orbit (HEO). The AO-40 experiment subsequently has been cited often in aerospace literature, as it remained the most comprehensive above-the-
constellation data source for nearly a decade and led to changes in the system’s specifications and applications. The results of the AO-40 experiment jump started a game-changing transformation in
navigation at HEO/GEO altitudes, enabling new and exciting missions in these orbits.

Bauer holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in aeronautics and astronautics from Purdue University. His career in aerospace spans 4 decades within NASA and in private industry

Bauer has been licensed since 1974. In 1983, in preparation for the space mission of Owen Garriott, W5LFL, he was responsible for setting up and operating the worldwide retransmission of Space Shuttle air-to-ground communications from Goddard Amateur Radio Club station WA3NAN.
This initiative provided a critical conduit of information to hams attempting to contact astronaut-hams in the pre-Internet era.”

On-line Information Sessions for ARISS-US School Contact Proposals

ARISS-US is accepting proposals from U.S. schools, museums, science centers and community youth organizations (working individually or together) to host an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station, or ARISS, radio contact with an orbiting space station crew member between Jan. 1 and June 30, 2018. Proposals are due April 15, 2017.

Informational Sessions
To help organizations learn about ARISS radio contacts and the proposal process, ARISS offers one-hour online information sessions and welcomes all questions. Attending an online session is not
required but strongly encouraged.

Informational sessions will be offered March 6, 2017, at 7 p.m. EST and March 16, 2017, at 4 p.m. EDT.

Ham radio satellite activation of Berry Islands, Bahamas

Steve M1ACB, Rob M0VFC and John M0IDA will be active on the FM and SSB amateur radio satellites from Berry Islands in the Bahamas.

The trio plan to operate from March 4-10 and will be using hand-held antennas. Since the FM satellites will only cover part of the USA they’ll also be using SSB on FO-29 to reach the British Isles and Europe.

They will be operating from Little Harbour Cay in the Berry Islands, IOTA NA-054, Grid Square FL15do.

NASA Explores Opportunity for Smaller Experiments to 'Hitch a Ride' to Mars

NASA's goals for human deep space exploration are complex and ambitious. To maximize resources as it pushes the boundaries of exploration, the agency is exploring opportunities to take advantage of emerging private sector space capabilities.

NASA released a request for information Monday regarding possible commercial sources to fly limited payloads on planned, non-NASA missions to Mars. The agency will use the responses to gather market data on the complete spectrum of commercial plans, and identify any excess capacity that may exist for NASA payloads.

Furthering NASA's human deep space exploration goals will require a significant amount of scientific research, and opportunities to collect data on Mars have been rare. Only seven successful missions to the surface of Mars have taken place in the history of space flight.

Evolving capabilities in the private sector have opened the possibility for NASA to take advantage of commercial opportunities to land scientific payloads on the surface of the Red Planet. Such capability would provide an additional method of acquiring science and engineering data concerning Mars, and would complement NASA's current deep space exploration efforts.

Belize on Satellite

Good evening to my fellow people of the birds,

The time has come. I will be venturing to the land of Belize March 11-19 and will be on the satellites with the call V31NJ. I will operate from various grids and possibly some islands (a side trip to
Roatan, Honduras is possible with operations from there, not positive yet). This is gonna be a vacation style op (going with my little brother for his spring break), so don't expect me on every pass.

If I can get a permit for Guatemala TG/NJ7H may also be on a few passes, though I'm not sure if from any grids different than in Belize.

QSLing will be via LoTW. If there is a demand, I can get some cards printed when I'm back.

Nayif-1 Status Report and New Dashboard

The Nayif-1 (EO-88) CubeSat has now been in orbit for more than two weeks and all systems continue to operate nominally.

The power budget is positive, the spin/tumble rate is acceptably low, on board temperatures are perfectly okay and, importantly, the educational/amateur transponder switching is taking place
autonomously as  planned.

More than 250 stations around the world have provided telemetry to the Nayif Data Warehouse and the FUNcube Team are extremely grateful to them for their invaluable support.

The experts have now formally allocated Catalog Number 42017 to Nayif-1 (EO88) and the TLEs can now be downloaded from Celestrak – TLEs

New Dashboards

The FUNcube Team have now updated the Dashboards for both Nayif-1 and FUNcube-1 so that they display only the telemetry received from the individual spacecraft that they are designed for. This will help users to display only the correct information and graphs and reduce confusion. Whilst they only display the data from ONE spacecraft, they will, as now, receive and decode the data from all FUNcube payloads currently in orbit and automatically submit it to the relevant Data Warehouse.

Two projects with AMSAT ties selected for NASA launches

Two cubesat missions with ties to AMSAT have been selected as part of the eighth round of the NASA CubeSat Launch Initiative. These spacecraft are eligible for placement on a launch manifest after final negotiations, depending on the availability of a flight opportunity.

TJREVERB is a CubeSat from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, in Alexandria, Virginia. This satellite will include an AMSAT Fox mode U/v FM radio system, and will be capable of serving as an analog FM repeater.

HuskySat-1 from the University of Washington in Seattle will carry a mode V/u linear transponder and 1200 baud BPSK beacon similar to RadFXsat-2. The satellite will demonstrate plasma propulsion and high gain telemetry in advance of a larger CubeSat lunar mission.

ARISS Equipment on SpaceX Launch

Included as part of the successful launch of the SpaceX Dragon vehicle to ISS is an ARISS Ericsson 2 meter VHF radio.  This radio will replace the Ericsson radio that failed a few months ago.  The VHF radio is used for school group contacts and amateur packet radio in the Columbus module.  Once the Dragon vehicle is berthed to ISS, the Ericsson will be unstowed and, at some point, installed in Columbus, replacing the UHF radio that is now supporting APRS packet and some school contacts.

The unmanned cargo ship packed with food and supplies for astronauts arrived safely at the International Space Station Thursday, 2/23/2017. The Dragon cargo ship was grabbed by the station's robotic arm at 5:44 am (1044 GMT).

Our thanks to SpaceX on an outstanding and historic flight from Kennedy Space Center's Launch Pad 39A, where many Space Shuttle missions and nearly all the Apollo moon missions were launched.  We also would like to thank our ARISS benefactors-NASA and CASIS, the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space.  And, of course, our amateur radio long-time sponsors-our national amateur radio organizations around the world, including the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) in the US, and our international AMSAT organizations, including AMSAT-NA.

ARISS is also making great progress on the development of the new interoperable radio system that we hope to use to replace our aging radio infrastructure in the Columbus module and the Service module.  The hard (and expensive) part of this effort is just beginning, with testing and human certification on the horizon.  We thank all that have donated to the cause thus far.  We hope you continue to help ARISS move forward through your support, including your volunteer time and talent and, of course, financial contributions through the AMSAT web site donate button.

VEGA Flight Opportunity for Multiple Small Satellites

Europe’s Vega small launcher is set to demonstrate its extended capability to deploy multiple light satellites using its new versatile Small Satellites Mission Service (SSMS) dispenser, in the second half of 2018.

This demonstration provides the first of the launch opportunities under the new Light satellite, Low-cost Launch opportunity (LLLor L3) Initiative initiated at the ESA Council Meeting at Ministerial Level in December 2016 with the aim to provide low-cost and regular launch services for European
Institutional light satellites through full exploitation of the Ariane 6 and Vega C launch systems’ capabilities.

This first proof-of-concept flight using the current Vega launch system will demonstrate and validate standard innovative services for light satellites.

The SSMS dispenser with its modular design enables Vega to provide launch opportunities for light satellites with an overall mass ranging from 1 kg CubeSats up to 400 kg minisats with different alternative configurations and relevant combinations under a ‘rideshare’ concept.

Potential customers, be they European public-sector organizations or other entities, are invited to respond to the joint ESA and European Commission Announcement of Opportunity, which can be downloaded together with its questionnaire, by 31 March.

Thanks to Nico Janssen for his work in predicting BY70-1's deorbit.

As noted last week, Nayif-1 was launched with 103 other satellites on 2-15-2017.  The cloud of satellites is beginning to spread and Nico Janssen, PA0DLO, has developed a TLE set that many on AMSAT-BB say is very accurate. I have included it in this week's distribution. Thanks again to a very busy Nico for his excellent work.

Detailed doppler measurements show that Nayif 1 is object 42017, 2017-008BX.

Keith Pugh, W5IU, suggested that I include Nayif-1 in the regular distribution so those using apps like PocketSat would be able to track it. Good idea Keith. (I have PocketSat myself!)

LUSAT LO-19 Calls Home

On Feb-20 15:45z LUSAT LO-19 on Orbit 141493 had been heard with strong carrier on 437.125 ± Doppler.

LUSAT had been in space last 27 years and still emits it's CW carrier un-modulated with 900 mW.

Now and then the satellite comes alive, it is useful to test reception and demonstrate Doppler, check antennas, etc.

Please try to listen, on http://amsat.innova-red.net/pass you will find an easy way to locate, receive, and thank you if reported.

Expect More from Amateur BY70-1 Youth Space Program

In announcing the end of a successful mission the students who built the amateur radio FM transponder satellite BY70-1 say “We hope more Amateur youth space program will be brought to you in the near future!”

The 2U CubeSat BY70-1 was built by students from the Beijing Bayi High School and carried into a 524 x 212 km orbit on a CZ-2D rocket launched from the Taiyuan Space Launch Center on December 28, 2016.

On February 17, 2017, as the satellite was about to burn up on its re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere, this end of mission statement was posted on the school’s website.

Dear friends of BY70-1:

Satellite BY70-1 has completed all designed missions. For the amateurs who completed 2-way QSO using the repeater onboard, received effective satellite telemetry, or obtained satellite camera photos, we would like to invite you sending connection data package (audio or video evidence), satellite
telemetry data or photos received to Email: 6015@bayims.cn.

So that we can keep statistics records and deliver our appreciation toward you in public. We would be pleased to exchange QSL card for QSO users, and some souvenirs for the telemetry or camera photos users.

We hope more Amateur youth space program will be brought to you in the near future!

Message  to US Educators Amateur Radio on the International Space Station Contact  Opportunity

Call for Proposals
Proposal Window February 15 –  April 15, 2017

The Amateur Radio on the International Space  Station (ARISS) Program is seeking formal and informal education institutions  and organizations, individually or working together, to host an Amateur Radio contact with  a crew member on board the ISS.  ARISS anticipates that the  contact would be held between January 1, 2018 and June 30, 2018. Crew scheduling  and ISS  orbits will
determine the exact contact dates. To maximize these radio contact opportunities, ARISS is looking for organizations that will draw large numbers of participants and integrate the contact into a well-developed education plan.

The deadline to submit a proposal is April 15,  2017.  Proposal information and documents can be found at www.arrl.org/hosting-an-ariss-contact.

The Opportunity Crew  members aboard the International Space Station will participate in scheduled  Amateur Radio contacts. These radio contacts are approximately 10 minutes in  length and allow students to interact with the astronauts through a question-and-answer session.

An ARISS contact is a voice-only  communication opportunity via Amateur Radio between astronauts and cosmonauts  aboard the space station and classrooms and communities. ARISS contacts afford  education audiences the opportunity to learn firsthand from astronauts what it  is like to live and work in space and to learn about space research conducted on  the ISS. Students  also
will have an opportunity to learn about satellite  communication, wireless technology, and radio science. Because of the nature of  human spaceflight and the complexity of scheduling activities aboard the ISS, organizations must demonstrate flexibility to accommodate changes in dates and  times of the radio contact.

Amateur Radio organizations around the  world, NASA, and space agencies in Russia, Canada, Japan and Europe sponsor this  educational opportunity by providing the equipment and operational support to  enable direct communication between crew on the ISS and students around the world via
Amateur Radio. In the US, the program is managed by AMSAT (Radio  Amateur Satellite
Corporation) and ARRL (American Radio Relay League) in partnership with NASA and CASIS (Center for the Advancement of Science in  Space).
