Space
in 2018
-------------
My annual review of space activities is available at
http://planet4589.org/space/papers/space18.pdf
Chang'e-4
----------
At
0214 UTC on Jan 3 Chang'e-4 began its descent burn from lunar orbit,
and it
landed in Von Karman crater at 177.59E 45.46S at 0226 UTC Jan 3.
At 1422 UTC
the same day, the Yutu-2 rover rolled onto the surface and
began its
explorations of the area.
International Space
Station
---------------------------
Expedition 58 remains underway
with Oleg Kononenko, David Saint-Jacques,
and Anne McClain.
On Jan 13
at 2010 UTC Dragon CRS-16 was unberthed from the Harmony module;
it was
released by Canadarm-2 at 2335 UTC and performed a deorbit burn
at 0419 UTC
Jan 14, landing off Baja at about 117.5W 28.1N at roughly 0510
UTC.
Progress MS-10, docked to the Zvezda aft port, carried out ISS
reboost burns
at 0307 UTC Dec 2 and 1802 UTC Jan 18.
Progress MS-09
undocked from the Pirs module at 1255 UTC Jan 25;
after a deorbit burn at
1608 UTC it was destroyed on reentry, with
debris falling in the S Pacific
east of New Zealand at 1650 UTC.
TJS-3
-----
On or before
Dec 31, after using its apogee engine to reach
geosynchronous orbit, the
TJS-3 satellite ejected what appears to be a
subsatellite; as of early Jan 13
both satellites were on station near
59E about 100 km apart. By Jan 28 the
separation had been adjusted to
about 90
km.
ZX-2D
-----
China carried out the first launch of the year
on Jan 10, placing the Zhongxing-2D
military communications satellite in
geotransfer orbit. By Jan 22 the satellite
was on station in GEO at
130.0E.
Iridium Next
------------
Deployment of the Iridium
Next constellation was completed on Jan 11 when a Falcon 9 launch
from
Vandenberg placed the final 10 satellites in orbit. The Falcon 9 first
stage
landed successfully on the JRTI droneship. The second stage was
deorbited
near Antarctica.
SSO-A
-----
Some of The SSO-A
satellites are now adjusting their orbits.
On Dec 19, Planet's Skysat C13
lowered its orbit from 575 x 590 to 566 x
577 km. KazSTSat raised its orbit
from 572 x 592 km to 579 x 594 km
from Jan 11 to Jan 20. Hawk C lowered its
orbit from 571 x 589 km
to 567 x 588 km from Jan 11 to Jan 25; Hawk B from
572 x 589 km
to 565 x 586 km from Jan 10 to Jan 27.
The remainder of
the objects from the launch remain in the original
orbit although some appear
to be making small km-level adjustments
(43777 on Dec 24) - in some cases
this may just be STRATCOM changing the
assignment of catalog numbers to
objects, it's hard to tell.
As of Jan 28 56 days after launch, 29
percent (19 of 65) of the objects
from the SSO-A launch remain unidentified,
including the large UFF and
LFF deployment platforms.
Newly identified
payloads include DARPA's Orbweaver 1 and 2. The
Orbweaver project, developed
for DARPA by Tethers Unlimited subsidiary
Firmamentum according to an article
in Space News, will use a robotic
processor to chew up an ESPA adapter ring
and turn it into an antenna. I
am guessing that's a long term goal and the
two SSO-A satellites are
cubesats testing some early tech for the
project.
CSO 1
-----
I inadvertently omitted a discussion of
CSO 1 in the
last JSR. CSO 1 is the first in a new generation of French
spy
satellites; the name stands for Composant Spatiale Optique
(Optical
Space Component). It was launched by a Soyuz ST-A from the
Centre
Spatial Guyanais on Dec 19. The 3.5-tonne satellite has a
high
resolution imager (probably around 0.3m resolution).
Iranian
launch
---------------
On Jan 15 Iran launched a three-stage Simorgh
from Khomeini Space
Centre. The third stage failed to operate correctly and
the
100-kg-class satellite payload, "Payam", failed to reach orbit.
Planned
orbit was 500 x 500 km x 55 deg. If the third stage did not
fire
at all, the payload probably fell in the Indian Ocean, possibly
about
1000 km west of the Cocos Is.
Epsilon
-------
JAXA's fourth
Epsilon vehicle flew from Uchinoura on Jan 18 and placed
a number of small
satellites in orbit. The third stage reached
a 221 x 734 km transfer orbit,
and the PBS stage entered a 480 x 512
km orbit where the satellites were
deployed.
RAPIS-1 (Rapid Innovative Payload Demonstration
Satellite), the main payload,
is a 200 kg technology satellite with a
variety of experiments including a
test of a `green' propellant thruster
system.
Risesat (Rapid International Scientific Experiment
Satellite),
a 59 kg satellite from a consortium led by Tohoku Univ.
carries
experimental imagers from Japan and Taiwan and space weather
experiments from Budapest
and Prague.
MicroDragon, from the
Vietnam National Space Centre and Keio Univ., is a 50 kg
satellite with
several experiments including an imager for ocean color
data.
OrigamiSat, from Tokyo Institute of Technology, is a 3U cubesat to
deploy an
experimental boom and membrane structure.
Aoba-Velox-IV is
a 2U cubesat with a pulsed plasma thruster and a low light
camera, from
Nanyang Tech U. (Singapore) and Kyushu Tech.
Nexus is a 1U cubesat from
Nihon University with an amateur radio payload.
ALE-1 is a 68 kg
satellite from the Tokyo-based Astro Live Experiences. It will
move to a
lower orbit and use gas guns to eject 0.4 kg, 1 cm pellets towards
the
atmosphere to create artificial meteor showers for
entertainment.
NROL-71
--------
ULA launched a Delta 4
Heavy from Vandenberg on Jan 19, putting the
National Reconnaissance Office's
USA 290 satellite in low polar orbit.
The satellite is believed to be the
first of a new series of imaging
spy satellites, probably derived from the
Improved CRYSTAL design
that in turn descended from the 1970s KENNEN
spacecraft which carried the KH-11
camera system. According to a posting on
the SeeSat-L observers' list,
its orbit is suspected to be 395 x 420 km x
73.6 deg, subject to confirmation.
CZ-11
-----
CALT flew the
6th Chang Zheng 11 from Jiuquan on Jan 21. The main payloads
were two Jilin-1
Spectral (Jilin-1 Guanpu 1,2) satellites with hyperspectral
imagers. The
first was given the name Jilin Lincao 1 and its primary mission
is forestry
support. The second is Wenchang Chaosuan 1, and is co-sponsored
by the Hainan
Modern Technology Group and its Wenchang supercomputer project.
Also aboard
were two 6U cubesats, XX-1-03 (also called Qingteng Zhi Xing) and
Lingque 1A.
Xiaoxiang-1-03 is a joint mission between Tianyi Research and
the online
Qingteng University business school. Lingque 1A (Lingque yi hao A xing)
from
Beijing ZeroG Lab Ltd. specializes in onboard detection of moving ground
targets.
PSLV-DL
-------
On Jan 24 ISRO carried out the first
launch of the PSLV-DL, a lightweight variant of the PSLV-XL
with only two
strapon boosters. It placed a 740 kg military imaging satellite for DRDO,
Microsat-R, in a 274 km orbit aat 1820 UTC. Additional PS4 stage burns at
1901 and 1947 UTC
placed the stage in a 450 km orbit. The PS4 has been
modified to serve as a spacecraft bus for
attached experiments; a 0.06 kg
femtosat student payload from Space Kids India, Kalamsat-v2,
is aboard to
test the systems. The PSLV PS4 was expected to operate for 15 hours on its
Li-ion
batteries, although Kalamsat may have its own solar panels. Future PS4
missions will have solar
arrays to provide long term power to their
payloads.
