VHF ACARS / HFDL (aka 'HF ACARS) 23 Oct 2016 Update

HFDL is operated by ARINC as the GLOBALink/HF service, with 15 ground stations spread over the globe sending ACARS-like messages from and to aircraft on shortwave frequencies (2-22 MHz). The number of customers is increasing rapidly, with almost 2000 aircraft equipped today! This is a really interesting facet of the radio monitoring hobby.

High Frequency Data Link (HFDL) is an ACARS communications media used to exchange data such as Aeronautical Operational Control (AOC) messages, Controller Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) messages and Automatic Dependent Surveillance (ADS) messages between aircraft end-systems and corresponding ground-based HFDL ground stations. Using the unique propagation characteristics of high-frequency radio waves, the ground stations provide data link communications to properly equipped aircraft operating anywhere in the world. The result, pilots can always communicate with someone on the ground.

Display Launcher by Mike Simpson http://www.rstools.info/DL.html

The Display Launched package mentioned above is a must have utility if you are monitoring HFDL, ACARS or GMDSS DSC digital signals. The best part of this utility -- its free! The Display Launcher package includes the following programs:-

1. PC-HFDL-Display - Which extracts the output from PC-HFDL log files and displays it on a grid.
2. ACARS-Display - Which extracts TCPIP data from MultiPSK Pro in VHF Acars mode.
3. HFDL-Display - Which extracts TCPIP data from MultiPSK Pro in HF Acars mode.
4. GMDSS-Display - Which extracts TCPIP shipping data from MultiPSK Pro in GMDSS mode.
5. ACARSD-Display - Which extracts the output from ACARSD log files and displays it on a grid
6. SBS3-ACARS-Display - Extracts TCPIP data from the Kinetics SBS-3 receiver.
7. Tools - Includes a utility to extract aircraft routing data from the PP flight routes forum .sqb files into ‘Flights.txt’ for use with the above aviation programs. Plus a utility to extract Aircraft data from Basestation.sqb

I use the Multipsk Pro/Display Launch package and it works super. You can get more details from the pdf manual located at http://www.rstools.info/Display-Launcher.pdf
