VP6R Pitcairn Island DXpedition Press Release (28th October)[edited].
VP6R Press Release 28 October 2019
We just finished working in the CQWW SSB Contest and made about 8500
SSB contacts on 160-10M. We had a lot of fun giving out a rare multiplier!
Several worked us on all six bands. The VP6R team wants to thank everyone
for working us during the contest.  We hope you had as much fun as we did
despite the challenging propagation conditions.  We will now resume our
regular DXpedition operations.
We now almost 60,000 contacts in Club Log with 4-5 full days of operation
left.
We have had reports of several FT8 contacts not being uploaded to Club
Log. We carefully documented a long session of FT8 and noted the stations
that did not show up in ?Fox.log? window, the log that FT8 creates in the
Fox/Hound mode. We found about 1-2 ?missing? contacts per hour. There is
another text file that FT8 creates while running AND WE FOUND THE MISSING
CONTACTS. One of our team members has written a program to extract them
and add them to log database. The FT8 development team is now aware of
this issue and this will be addressed in future releases. Summary: IF you
have seen us send ?YOURCALL RR73?, you can rest assured you ARE in the log
and your contact WILL be uploaded to Club Log. Give us some time after we
go QRT to extract and add the missing contacts to our logs.
We will have one more night on 60M this date (Oct 28) starting at about
0400Z. We will be on 5.357 MHz with FT8 F/H mode.
We will NOT have any RTTY operation on this DXpedition. We will continue
to operate FT8 until we go QRT.
We have had several days of torrential rain with high winds. Some wind
gusts were recorded over 100 mph. We have had damaged antennas, which,
fortunately, have all been relatively easy to fix. The weather is starting
to improve, but we are also near the beginning of the rainy season. Today
we have had sunshine, then downpours, then sunshine. Repeat every 5 minutes.
We can attest to the fact that Pitcairn boasts of ?the world?s friendliest
mud.?
We have two operation sites. The remote old Radio Site where all of the
low band operation has taken place, will be dismantled after local sunrise
on October 31. The next morning, November 1, we will be totally QRT and
dismantle everything at our base location. Everything must be packed and
stored. Some of the equipment we have used needs to be loaded onto the
Braveheart for the South Orkney DXpedition. We depart Sunday, November 3,
on the Braveheart.

NCDXF PRESS RELEASE (date October 25th). The following was sent out by
Ned Stearns, AA7A, NCDXF Vice President: The Northern California DX
Foundation (NCDXF) has awarded a grant of $4,000 to Club Log to support
their capital needs for important IT system upgrades to move their system
into the future. Michael, G7VJR, recently reached out to NCDXF with an
inquiry for interest in support that triggered an immediate and over-
whelming response from every NCDXF Director. Two of the directors engaged
in the ongoing VP6R DXpedition stepped away from the pileups a few minutes
and echoed in the response:

"Club Log is a MAJOR part of what makes a good DXpedition (both during
  and after the event)”
"Michael and his group do a wonderful service to the DX Community
  worldwide"
"Club Log is a real asset to every DXer and DXpeditioner"
"I use it regularly for OQRS and other DX chasing capabilities in
addition to uploading my own QSOs there regularly from home or DX
locations. It is an invaluable tool for DXers and DXpeditions."
"It's an incredible resource that has become the standard"

Following NCDXF's action, Michael is quoted:

"For some time now, I've been anxious to provide a more resilient way
to run Club Log. With 70,000 active users, and most significant expeditions
depending upon it, it's vital to keep Club Log working around the clock -
but until now the expense has been prohibitive. Club Log depends on do-
nations for its running costs, but to fund a capital project like this
takes the financial backing of a foundation that takes the lead and
supports expeditions and DX-related projects at a really high level.
NCDXF has made an extraordinary grant to Club Log, giving me an oppor-
tunity to unlock all the work that I need to do in this area. Many thanks
to the foundation and its members for this tremendous boost to Club Log.
The newly-upgraded servers will launch in early 2020."
NCDXF fully supports the Club Log mission and its dedicated team of
volunteers that is creating an invaluable service to the DXing community.

STANDARD TIME. Remember to change your clocks next weekend! Countries who
observe Daylight Saving Time (DST), which took place on Sunday, March
10th, are now expected to move their "local clocks" backward 1 hour on
Sunday, November 3rd, from 2:00 AM local time to 1:00 AM. In 2020, Day-
light Saving Time (DST) will again go into effect on Sunday, March 8th,
at 2:00 AM local time. For the history and details about ST and DST, as
well as an interesting map of the world (showing the countries who observe
DST), see:    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_time
              http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_saving_time
              http://www.timeanddate.com/time/dst/2020.html
              https://www.timeanddate.com/time/change/usa?year=2020
ADDED NOTE: Hopefully, all amateur radio operators know NOT to change
their GMT/UTC/ZULU clocks. However, since most operators usually set their
computers to local time, some may have to change their settings on "some"
ham radio software (ex. logging, propagation, DXTelnet, etc..) programs.

SU8, EGYPT (Update/Press Release, date October 24th). Martti, OH2BH, sent
out the following [edited]: WORLD RADIOCOMMUNICATION CONFRENCE (WRC)
SPECIAL EVENT [From Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt]: Egyptian Radio Amateur Society
(ERASD) together with National Telecommunications Radio Authority (NTRA)
of Egypt, are jointly announcing a special event and permit of SU8X and
SU8WRC to conduct operations from the city of Sharm El Sheikh in Southern
Egypt, the venue of WRC. Operations will begin on this Friday evening with
participation in the CQWW Contest as SU8X, and following the opening of
the WRC on Monday as SU8WRC.
The team is headed by Said, SU1SK, the president of ERASD, and his
associates, Tarek, SU2TA, and Yasset, SU3YM, whom are also all attending
the WRC as a part of the NTRA delegation. This is a historical day for
ERASD as along with this event and operations, several new privileges
have been authorized, such as 6M for the first time for this event.
ERASD has invited the folks of Radio Arcala of Finland, OH8X, to join
them as their honorary guests and experts for sharing Amateur Radio with
their partners from evolving countries, normally off of amateur radio’s
beaten track, who could further benefit on Amateur Radio. Martti, OH2BH,
and Niko, OH2GEK, will represent OH8X and also make an amateur radio
show-case at their dedicated executive radio show-room.
After the opening of WRC and the CQWW the team will also entertain
Amateur Radio operators as part of their national delegations to WRC as
well as those sun tanning hams that are enjoying the venue at the beautiful
tourist destination of Sharm El Sheikh. The special event site can be
contacted from Monday morning onwards at (su8wrc@gmail.com).
The WRC is a culmination of the set Amateur Radio 2.0 where traveling
hams and their supporters team up for a good cause, bring in their resources
to remote societies at large. Those behind this new approach are INDEXA’s
Ralph Fedor, K0IR, Seisa’s Zorro Myazawa, JH1AJT and the Radio Arcala team,
all of which also support ERASD and this special event.
WRC has participation from all of the world’s ITU member countries, DX
rare and regular.  Isn’t it only fair that regulars step forward and help
those rare ones in need, and make them active – also DX-wise? And hopefully
become supportive of Amateur Radio on the long run.

TC29, TURKEY (Special Event). Look for some Turkism ham radio clubs [ATRO
(YM1KTR), TANGO ALFA (YM1KE) and TAMAD (YM1KAD)] to be on the air as
TC29OCT between October 26-29th, to celebrate Turkey's anniversary of
becoming a republic. Many people in Turkey celebrate "Republic Day" on
October 29th, by attending performances and participating in traditional
processions with flags and musical bands. The Turkish Republic's founder
Mustafa Kemal Ataturk proclaimed "Republic Day" as Turkey's most important
holiday.

VP6R PITCAIRN ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (Update). The Pitcairn Island DX-
pedition VP6R Team continues to be active until November 1st. Glenn, W0GJ,
reported on October 20th: "The team is down to 12 operators after one
individual fell and suffered several fractures. He was put aboard a supply
ship and will be evacuated to Mangareva and on to Papeete." Glenn also
mentioned on October 22nd: "Our evacuated team member has made it to the
hospital in Papeete, French Polynesia. Thanks for your prayers and concerns.
All family members are aware, but for privacy, we will not release a name
here.
Activity continues on 160-10 meters, including 6 meters EME, using CW,
SSB, RTTY and FT8 (F/H). The team will continuously have at least one
station active on 20m throughout their stay to hopefully provide a chance
for everyone to make an all time new country contact. The VP6R team will
also participate in the 2019 CQWW SSB Contest this coming weekend October
26-27th weekend. There will be some operation on the CW bands and WARC
bands during the contest.

AMSAT Goal: "Amateur Radio in Every CubeSat"
The ARRL Letter for October 17, 2019

AMSAT wants to see Amateur Radio in every CubeSat, and it's part-
nering with non-Amateur Radio partners to make that happen. In the
"Apogee View" editorial for the September/October issue of The AMSAT
Journal, Executive Vice President Paul Stoetzer, N8HM, wrote, "[W]e
continue to support a stream of LEO satellites. RadFxSat-2/Fox-1E
is ready for launch no earlier than December 1, 2019, on the ELaNa XX
mission. The linear transponder and telemetry system carried aboard
Fox-1E was designed for use in different CubeSats by merely adding
an interface adapter for connection to the host bus."

Stoetzer said CubeSat programs interested in launching an Amateur
Radio payload may partner with AMSAT to carry a Fox-1E module on
their spacecraft. "By providing Amateur Radio capability, the Cube-
Sat program gets a worldwide ground station network to receive
their telemetry and experiment data while the Amateur Radio commun-
ity gets a transponder to use in orbit," he pointed out.

Stoetzer said the first such partnership will be with the Husky
Satellite Lab at the University of Washington. Its 3U CubeSat --
HuskySat-1 -- is set to launch on the ELaNa XXV mission from Wallops
Island, Virginia, no sooner than November 2. A Northrop Grumman
Cygnus spacecraft will carry HuskySat-1 to the International Space
Station, and after completing its mission there, Cygnus will con-
tinue to an orbit of approximately 500 kilometers (310 miles) to
deploy HuskySat-1. "After a 30-day mission to complete tests of
its experimental payloads -- a pulsed plasma thruster, and a K-band
(24 GHz) communications system -- the satellite will be turned over
to AMSAT, and the linear transponder will be made available to the
Amateur Radio community," Stoetzer said.

Ed. Note - HuskySat-1 will carry a 30 kHz wide 145 to 435 MHz linear
transponder for amateur radio SSB/CW communications along
with 1k2 BPSK telemetry. The IARU has coordinated a downlink
on 436.810-435.840 MHz and uplink on 145.910-145.940 MHz.
NASA TV (http://www.nasa.gov/ntv) will provide coverage of
the launch. Pre-launch details are posted at:

AMSAT VP User Services Describes Planning for Improvements

At the conclusion of the 2019 AMSAT Symposium and Annual General
meeting, Robert Bankston, KE4AL, VP User Services provided a state-
ment outlining his plans. Robert's statement follows:

I am so honored to be elected by the AMSAT Board of Directors to be
the AMSAT Treasurer and reelected to be the AMSAT Vice-President of
User Services, as well as reappointed as the Director of AMSAT Ambas-
sadors by the AMSAT President. Thank you for your confidence in me.
I am humbled. This is a lot of hats to wear, along with my full-time
job, but I look forward to the challenge. I believe in AMSAT's mis-
sion and have a wonderful team of volunteers to assist me.

I am excited to announce that there are major improvements coming
for our AMSAT members in the near future. The AMSAT Board of Direc-
tors approved my recommendations for an internet-based, member manage-
ment system, the transition to a digitally delivered, full-color
AMSAT Journal, and a complete overhaul of our AMSAT website. I have
been putting together these proposals for several months and thank
the Board of Directors for the permission to move these projects
forward. These improvements will modernize how AMSAT serves you.
I hope that you will be as impressed with them as I am.

The member management system puts you in control of your membership
account, allowing you to update your contact information, pay your
dues, and register for events in real time. In addition, the program
will automatically push out reminders, newsletters, and a digital
copy of the AMSAT Journal.

Transitioning to a digitally-delivered, AMSAT Journal will allow us
to provide a full-color magazine, without raising the cost of member-
ship. In addition, we will have to opportunity to provide member-only
content on our website, to include back issues of our AMSAT Journal.

Lastly, we will be working on a complete overhaul of our AMSAT web-
site. Over the years, our website has received several facelifts,
and, in the process, it has become somewhat disjointed. Our goal is
to make the navigation more intuitive and offer the content you
deserve. The front of the website will focus on external visitors,
explaining who we are, what we do, and what we have to offer. We will
also have portals for our members and friends in the AMSAT community,
how to guides on getting started in amateur radio satellites, and all
the important information about current satellites you will need to
work them.

AMSAT's User Services is committed to serving AMSAT members and the
AMSAT community and to deliver the quality services you deserve as we
move forward into the next 50 years of Keeping Amateur Radio is Space!
If you would like to join us on this incredible journey, we could sure
use you help.

73,

Robert Bankston, KE4AL
Vice-President, User Services
Director, AMSAT Ambassadors
Treasurer
Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT)

The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Program
is seeking formal and informal education institutions and organiza-
tions, individually or working together, to host an Amateur Radio
contact with a crew member on board the ISS. ARISS anticipates that
the contact would be held between July 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020.
Crew scheduling and ISS orbits will determine the exact contact dates.
To maximize these radio contact opportunities, ARISS is looking for
organizations that will draw large numbers of participants and inte-
grate the contact into a well-developed education plan.

The deadline to submit a proposal is November 30, 2019. Proposal
information and documents can be found at https://www.ariss.org/

AMSAT and ARISS are currently supporting a FundRazr campaign to raise
$150,000 for critical radio infrastructure upgrades on ISS. These up-
grades are necessary to enable students to continue to talk to astro-
nauts in space via Amateur Radio. We have reached a great milestone
with $33,830 raised or about 23% towards our goal. This would not have
been possible without your outstanding generosity!! For more informa-
