Jonathan's Space Report
No. 759                                                        2019 Jan 2 Somerville, MA
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spaceship Two
--------------

Virgin Galactic completed its first suborbital spaceflight on Dec 13.
The White Knight Two carrier aircraft, VMS Eve, took off from runway
30/12 at Mojave Air and Space Port, California, at 1511:35 UTC, on its
flight WK2-261.  After looping around to the east and north, VMS Eve
headed back south towards Mojave and at 1559:39 UTC, over  118.22W
35.39N near Kelso Valley, dropped the Spaceship Two vehicle VSS Unity on
its flight N202VG-015/VP-03. After 2 second free fall the hybrid motor
was ignited for a 60.0 second burn. The spacecraft, carrying astronauts
Mark 'Forger' Stucky and  Frederick 'C.J.' Sturckow, flew to an apogee
of 82.682 km and descended safely to a landing on the same runway at
Mojave with wheels stop at 1613:47UTC for a flight time of 14m08s.

Chang'e-4
----------

Chang'e-4 completed its lunar orbit insertion burn at 0845 UTC Dec 12;
China reported the vehicle is in a 100 x 400 km orbit, presumably polar.
Radio tracking by S. Tilley and others derive a 138 x 445 km x 85.0 deg
orbit. On Dec 30 at 0054, the orbit was lowered to 15 x 100 km. Landing
is expected on Jan 3.

Osiris-Rex
----------

The Osiris-Rex probe arrived in the vicinity of Bennu on Dec 1.
On Dec 31 at 1943:55 UTC it carried out an orbit insertion burn to enter
a 1.4 x 2.0 km orbit around the asteroid.

New Horizons
------------

The New Horizons probe passed about 3500 km from the cold classical
Kuiper Belt object 2014 MU69 at 0533 UTC on 2019 Jan 1; the encounter
occured 43 astronomical units (6.0 light hours) from the Sun. Early images
show the body is a contact binary with a rotation period of 15 +/- 1
hours.

International Space Station
---------------------------

Expedition 57 continued aboard the ISS until the undocking of Soyuz MS-09;
Expedition 58 is now underway.

On Dec 11 astronauts Kononenko and Prokop'ev made spacewalk VKD-45a from the
Pirs airlock, using suits Orlan MKS-5 and MKS-4 respectively.
The airlock was depressurized at 1539 UTC and the hatch was opened at 1559 UTC;
hatch was closed at 2344 UTC and the airlock was repressurizaed at 2348 UTC.
The spacewalkers used the GStM-1 and GStM-2 booms to traverse from the Pirs module
to the orbital module (bitovoy otsek, BO) of the Soyuz MS-09 ferry ship to inspect
the mysterious hole drilled in its pressure hull that caused a leak detected on Aug 29.
They worked in the Soyuz MS-09 area from 1920 to 2230 UTC.

Kononenko and Prokop'ev cut into the fabric thermal insulation of the
Soyuz MS-09 BO and then used a knife and shears to cut away a section of
the metal MMOD (micrometeorite and orbital debris) shield layer that
covers the pressure hull. They took samples from the epoxy in the hole
and a part of the MMOD shield for return and analysis.

The first cut in the BO covering was made at 1953 UTC; by 2010 UTC
small mm-scale debris from the insulation was visible on video coverage
floating away from the worksite.  This was soon to be followed by much
larger pieces. Between 2037-2053 UTC, 2103-2117 UTC and to a lesser extent
from 2121 to 2210 UTC at least 30 cm-scale and probably
20 5-cm to 10-cm scale pieces of insulation floated away. The largest amount of
debris generation happened from 2047 to 2050 UTC with many small pieces.

Probably the largest piece, possibly about 15 x 5 cm or larger, was
ejected at 2051 UTC and may be the one cataloged as object 43847.  The
hole was located at 2118 UTC; the MMOD shield sample was cut at 2121
UTC.

On Dec 14 the SSRMS removed the GEDI Earth observing experiment from the
Dragon trunk and handed it to the JRMS which installed it at EFU6 on the
Kibo Exposed Facility. On about Dec 16, SSRMS and SPDM moved RRM-3
from Dragon's trunk to ELC-1 site 3.

On Dec 18 the Kibo RMS arm moved the 450 kg SEDA-AP package from EFU-11
on the Kibo Exposed Facility to the top of the Kibo pressurized
logistics module ELM-PS.  The package's mast failed to retract,
preventing its disposal aboard Dragon. SEDA-AP was jettisoned on Dec 20
around 2250 UTC and cataloged as 1998-067PU/43870.

On Dec 20 at 0140 UTC Soyuz MS-09 undocked from Rassvet, marking the end
of Expedition 57 and the beginning of Expedition 58. Astronauts Prokop'ev,
Gerst and Aunon-Chancellor departed the ISS leaving Kononenko (new ISS
commander), Saint-Jacques and McClain aboard. Soyuz MS-09 deorbit
burn was at 0410:52 UTC, the much-abused orbital module was jettisoned
at 0438 UTC, and reentry began 0441 UTC.

Electron
--------

Rocket Lab launched its 4th Electron vehicle, "This One's For Pickering", on Dec 16, carrying 13
cubesats as follows:
 Space technology - Albus (NASA-Glenn, testing advanced electrical bus);
                   CHOMPTT (U. Florida; laser transfer of time calibration)
                   CubeSail  (U. Illinois/Catholic U.; 260-m tether)
                   RSat-P (US Naval Academy; robot arm tests)
                   Shields (NASA-Langley, radiation shielding)
                   Aerocube-11A/11B (Aerospace Corp, tests of new imagers)
 Space weather and radiation - ISX-CP11 (Cal Poly), NMTSat (New Mexico Tech),
                     CeReS (GSFC), STF (GSFC/West Virginia U)
 Astronomy -    SHFT-1 'Goergen' (DARPA/JPL) for HF radio astronomy
 Student test satellite - DaVinci (North Idaho STEM Charter Academy

GSAT-7A
--------

On Dec 19 India launched GSAT-7A, a Ku-band communications satellite for the Indian Air Force.
Launch vehicle was GSLV-F11, which introduced the newly stretched CUS-15 upper stage replacing
the old CUS-12. By Jan 1, GSAT-7A was on station at 63E.

Kosmos-2533
------------

Russia launched a Blagovest military communications satellite on Dec 21
aboard a Proton-M/Briz-M rocket from Baykonur. Some reports suggested a
problem with the final Briz-M burn, but on Dec 29 it was shown by US
tracking in a 35421 x 35802 km x 0.2 deg orbit drifting over 77E.

Hongyun
-------

At 2351 UTC on Dec 21 China's CALT launched the 5th CZ-11, carrying the
first Hongyun broadband wifi distribution satellite for CASIC. The
satellite's name is Hongyun gongcheng jishu yanzheng weixing (Hongyun
Engineering Technology Verification Satellite). It was inserted in a
1065 x 1072 km x 99.9 deg sun-sync orbit at 0600 local time descending
node; the CZ-11 4th stage made a depletion burn at 0008 UTC to a 642 x
1140 km x 100.4 deg orbit.

GPS-3
-----

The first GPS III satellite, SV01 'Vespucci', was launched on Dec 23
after many years of delays. GPS 3 is based on Lockheed Martin's A2100
bus. GPS 3 has a range of improvements, notably increased power and the
new L1C civilian signal which will improve accuracy for non-military
users. The satellite has a mass of 4400 kg including propellant.

TJS-3
-----

On Dec 24 China's CALT launched a CZ-3C from Xichang with the TJS-3
(Tongxing Jishu Shiyan 3, Communications Engineering Test Sat 3).  TJS
seems to be a cover name for several military GEO programs. The TJS-1 is
thought to be a large GEO SIGINT, Qianshao-3; TJS-2 is thought to be the
Huoyan-1 missile early warning test satellite.  The use of the CZ-3C
instead of the CZ-3B for the TJS-3 launch (CZ-3C has only 2 strapons
rather than 4) suggests it may be different from both of the first two;
TJS-3 is reported to be a SAST/Shanghai payload. TJS-3 reached GEO over
58E by Dec 31 and released a possible debris object or small secondary
payload.

Vostochniy launch
-----------------

Roskosmos flew a Soyuz-2-1A/Fregat from Vostochniy on Dec 27, placing
the 473-kg Kanopus-V 5 and 6 imaging payloads in orbit along with
the 80-kg GRUS imager from Japanese weather company AXELSPACE and
a cluster of cubesats:
  Eight Lemur-2 AIS/ADS-B/GNSS-RO payloads from Spire Global;
  16 Flock-3k Dove imaging payloads from Planet;
  ZACUBE-2 from CPUT-FSATI, Cape Town, S Africa;
  UWE-4 from the University of Wurzburg, Germany;
  Lume-1 from the University of Vigo, Spain;
  D-Star ONE Sparrow from German Orbital Systems, Berlin;
  iSat, another GOS/Berlin D-Star ONE to be delivered on orbit to iSky Tech of Prague.

Hongyan launch
---------------

China's SAST launched the first YZ-3 upper stage on a CZ-2D from Jiuquan on Dec 29.

The CZ-2D puth the YZ-3 stage in a 190 km x 50 deg parking orbit. The
first two YZ-3 burns reached a 515 x 525 km x 50.0 deg orbit; the
Chongqing test satellite for the Hongyan LEO comms constellation was
deployed together with the first three Yunhai-2 payloads. The YZ-3 then
made two more burns to a 1090 x 1100 km x 50.0 deg orbit and deployed
the remaining 3 Yunhai-2 satellites.  The Yunhai-2 satellits are GNSS-RO
meteorology satellites. I believe the YZ-3 stage then made a
deorbit burn; it probably reentered near Australia around 1145 UTC.

Saudisat launch
---------------

The Chinese rocket that put Saudisat-5A/5B in orbit also orbited 10 small
satellites. Their identities have become more clear.
The 7 Piao chong (Ladybird) satellites from CommSat/Jiutian Weixing Keji Fazhan YG (Beijing)
consist of the 100 kg Piao chong 1 and 6 smaller satellites for relaying IoT data
for various customers:
    Piao chong 2 (6U) is also known as Maowang Shouyinji Xing  (Elvis Radio Sat)
    Piao chong 3 (6U) is also known as Huami xing and relays data from wearable Huami Tech
         fitness devices.
    Piao chong 4 (6U)'s mission has not been revealed although it is thought that one of the
         satellites is involved in relaying data from instrumented collars on giant pandas.
    Piao chong 5 (3U) is also called Li ke Da Jiaoyu Weixing (Lida Education Satellite),
     for Li Da Education Technology Group YG of Shanghai.
    Piao chong 6 (3U) is called Tianmao guoji xing and is connected to the Tmall International
     subsidiary of the AliBaba online shopping group.
    Piao chong 7 (3U) is called RE:X xing, and is owned by Luhan Studio, associated with
     the Seoul-based Chinese musician Lu Han.
The remaining three payloads use the Sagittarius-1 cubesat bus (probably 3U?) jointly developed
by ADA Space (Guoxing Yuhang Keji, Chengdu) and Tianyi Research:
    Xinjiang Jiaotong-01 relays IoT data from traffic in Xinjiang
    TFSTAR, or Douyu-666, connects users of the Douyu.com video streaming platform
    TY/DF-1 is a test satellite for Tianyi's Xingshidai constellation.

Errata
------

The PSLV launch carried Centauri-2 and Hiber 1;
the SSO-A launch carried Centauri-1 and Hiber 2. I got this the wrong way
round in the last JSR. Identifications for the SSO-A satellites are trickling
in; the table below gives what I believe to be the current state of play.
