3Y0I BOUVET ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (Update). The following was posted
on the Rebel DX Group's Web page (https://www.rebeldxgroup.com/), dated
October 13th: Dom is working on Rebel projects in Fiji and will return
to Poland at some point where he will send out 3D2CR QSL cards.
After 200K of our private money spent from the Rebel Team's first attempt
at Bouvet, we have recently decided we will no longer "self fund" the cost
of fuel for any second attempt. We expect the cost of fuel for attempt #2
to be near or at 80K. If we can raise 80K, a Rebel Team will go.....

AAW 2020. Gianni, I1HYW, reports the following [edited]: "The Antarctic
Activity Week (AAW) is celebrating every year since 2003. The 17th Edition
of the AAW will take place between February 10-17th, 2020.
Purpose of the A.A.W. is to increase world wide interest around the
Antarctic Continent and its related matters, with the aim of staying
close to the researchers and personnel who are spending their time away
from home and families, studying the Antarctic life and its secrets.
Addition purpose is to share what Nations and Organizations are doing
to protect this still non contaminated corner of the world, to share a
message of peace WW.
Normally we did run the AAW on the last week of February, in concomi-
tance with the 22nd of February, when the Argentines rejoice the Argentine's
Antarctica Day (DIA DE LA ANTARTIDA ARGENTINA see www.marambio.aq ), but
this year we did anticipate the date, in order to leave our Argentinean
friends the full focus on their event.
Launching the 17th AAW, WAP (Worldwide Antarctic Program), invites all
Radio Amateurs (OMs & SWLs) around the world, Clubs and Organizations as
well as other important groups and individual operators WW to join and
share with us, this initiative.
All stations will qualify for WAP WADA and WAP ASEA (Antarctic Special
events Award).
Again our intention is to draw your attention to the Antarctic Continent,
and AAW is the unique event WW where Hams (in any corners of the world,
and not necessarily in Antarctica) wish to celebrate and improve World-
wide interest around the Icy Continent.
  Check (http://www.waponline.it/antarctic-activity-week/aaw-2020/) to
see a dedicated page and who the operators will be, as they sign up.

OR0/OR18, BELGIUM (Special Event). To celebrate the 18th birthday of HRH
Princess Elisabeth, members of the Belgian IARU Society UBA will activate
special event station OR0YAL (which could be read as O Royal) between
October 25th and December 25th. During the same time period, over 30

stations during this time-frame. The certificate will be available in four
different classes: Bronze (30 pts), Silver (50 pts), Gold (70 pts) and
Platinum (110 pts). Each "OR18" station as well as "OR0YAL" counts as
two points on the first band worked and one additional point on every
additional band worked. Contacts made on the same band but in different
modes do not count separately. No band or mode restrictions nor any
endorsements. Please note that how ever they encourage you to do so,

NEW QSL MANAGER FOR ANTARCTICA STATIONS KC4AAA, KC4AAC and KC4USV.
The QSL Manager for KC4AAA, KC4AAC and KC4USV was Larry Skilton, K1IED.
Larry became a Silent Key on June 2, 2018. Bob Schenck, N2OO, on behalf
of the QSL Managers Society along with an assist from Gerry Kersus,
W1GD, were able to recover the logs and blank cards from Larry's family
earlier this year. With an assist from the QSL Managers Society, a new
  QSL Manager has been assigned.
The new QSL Manager for these 3 stations will be Bill Erhardt, K7MT.
Bill was at McMurdo Station for two seasons (2008/09 & 2009/10) and
worked with Larry, K1IED, and helped recover about 7 years of back
QSLs and logs while at Mac Town. Bill mentioned that Larry was a great
guy and he was saddened to hear that he was SK. Bill offered to be
available to take over as QSL Manager for the 3 stations (KC4AAA, KC4AAC

VP6R Pitcairn Island DXpedition Press Release (20th October)[edited].
The Braveheart anchored just off Pitcairn Island at dawn, Thursday,
October 17th.  After customs & immigration, the team was transported
to the home of Andy Christian where all of the equipment was waiting
for us. This equipment arrived about 6 weeks prior to our arrival. The
steep dirt roads were very muddy from lots of recent rains and had our
equipment not been prepositioned, we would have been delayed by several
days getting all stations on the air.

By the end of the first day we had antennas up and four stations QRV
at Andy?s house.

The next morning (Friday) everyone moved to the old Radio Site to set
up more antennas and stations. This is our primary low band site. The DX
Engineering 160M falling derrick vertical is almost full-size and generated
huge pileups that night, with 700 stations in the 160M log!

Saturday morning left just a couple more antenna projects to finish and
by late morning everything was set up and we settled into our operating
routine.

Pitcairn has power from 8 am until 10 pm. After 10 pm we switch to
generators until morning. The Radio Site is 100% generator powered.

As of about 2400Z Sunday, we have over 16,000 Q?s in the logs, including
several 6M EME contacts.

We are down to 12 operators today. One of the team members fell, suffering
several fractures. A supply ship was leaving today and he is being evacuated
to Mangareva and on to Papeete. Naturally we are all disappointed with this
situation, but medically it is in everyone?s best interest. DXpeditions
to remote places are not without risk and medical care is quite limited
at best.

The weather has been very cooperative with pleasant temperatures. When
it rains, which is often, the dirt roads become ?the world?s friendliest
mud,? as the residents call it, making travel between the two sites some-
what treacherous.

We will have a station on 20M continuously, often with more than one
mode, with the goal of giving Pitcairn Island a new one to everyone.

The Flex Radios are working extremely well. With good conditions, at
times we have been able to sustain nearly 400 Q?s/hr with FT8 Fox & Hound
mode, working five stations simultaneously!

Logs are periodically uploaded to ClubLog during the times we have
?commercial? power on the island.

Please check our website often for the latest updates: www.pitcairndx.com

Cubesat Simulators Launched

Dr. Alan Johnston, KU2Y, Vice President - Educational Affairs has
announced the general availability of the AMSAT Cubesat Simulators.
Speaking at the 37th Annual Space Symposium, Alan reports that since
the prototype Cubesat Simulators were introduced at Hamvention in May,
2019, the simulators  have undergone testing and final release.  Among
the schools testing the simulators was Bishop O'Connell High School in
Arlington, Virginia.  Science and Engineering teacher Melissa Pore
presented to the symposium audience her experience with using a
simulator in one of her engineering clubs and how her student
benefitted from their use.

A Cubesat Simulator is a self-contained satellite model that reports
solar cell performance via standard AFSK 1200 BPS AX.25 telemetry.
The telemetry can be decoded with a simple SDR ground station.  A
Cubesat Simulator package consists of the 1U simulator, a halogen work
light to simulate sunshine, and a motorized rotating turntable that
mimics the satellite tumbling through space.  The four  loaner
packages are packed and shipped in a hard case.  The simulator is
shipped prepaid while the user pays return shipping.

Persons interested in borrowing a CubeSat Simulator for a local
presentation is encouraged to contact Alan at KU2Y at amsat dot org.

Affairs.]

Changes to AMSAT-NA TLE Distribution

The following Amateur Radio satellite has decayed from orbit and has
been removed from this week's TLE distribution:

TNS 0-2 - NORAD CAT ID 42914 - Decayed 10/15/2019 (per Space-Track).

Last week a number of "N"s were present in a few TLEs which caused some
programs to reject those TLEs. Note: Some (but not all) of the raw TLEs
from SpaceTrack have plus signs (+) which are not necessary. All plus
signs (+) in the TLEs are routinely changed to a blank space.

Last week all plus signs were incorrectly changed to the letter "N".
This was due to a change in the formatting program and a typing error
that substituted a "N" instead of a single blank space everytime a plus
sign was present. That problem has been corrected and should not be an
issue in the future.

[ANS thanks Ray Hoad, WA5QGD, for the above information]

Satellite Shorts From All Over

+ The AMSAT Office will be closed on Monday, October 21 as the AMSAT
  Symposium wraps up.
(ANS thanks Martha Saragovitz, AMSAT Manager, for the above informa-
tion -- you deserve a day off, Martha!)

+ Astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir carried out history’s
first all-female spacewalk Friday, floating outside the Internation-
al Space Station and successfully installing a 230-pound replacement
battery charger in the lab’s solar power system. The historic excur-
sion was carried out in a blaze of public interest that rose all the
  way to the White House.
(ANS thanks Spaceflight Now for the above information)

+ NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine has named Douglas Loverro as the
agency’s new associate administrator for the Human Exploration and
Operations Mission Directorate. Loverro succeeds former astronaut
Kenneth Bowersox, who has been acting associate administrator since
July. Previously, Loverro spent three decades in the Department of
Defense and the National Reconnaissance Office developing, managing,
and establishing national policy for the full range of national
  security space activities.
(ANS thanks spaceref.com for the above information)

+ SpaceX is seeking approval to add up to 30,000 more satellites to
its Starlink broadband network, on top of 12,000 spacecraft already
authorized by U.S. government regulators, according to filings sub-
mitted to the International Telecommunication Union.
(ANS thanks Spaceflight Now for the above information)

+ Possibly related to the previous news item, LeoLabs announced that
they plan to build four additional radar installations for tracking
space debris. Their current installations can track objects down to
about a 10 cm diameter, but with their new installations they’ll
theoretically be able to track objects as small as 2 cm. In general,
current radar systems tend to be limited on the lower end to objects
in the 5-10 cm range. Systems like LeoLabs’ and the U.S. Air Force’s
upcoming Marshall Islands-based Space Fence will improve coverage,
but still won’t see the 128 million objects from 1 mm to 1 cm, which
have the potential to disable or completely destroy a satellite.
(ANS thanks The Orbital Index for the above information)

+ Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, who became the first person in his-
tory to spacewalk in 1965, has died aged 85. He went on to become
the commander of Soyuz-Apollo, the first ever joint US-Soviet mis-
sion in 1975. Leonov died at Moscow's Burdenko hospital on Friday,
Oct. 11 after a long illness.

Catalog of Deep Space Objects
-----------------------------

The US satellite catalog is pretty comprehensive for artificial objects
in Earth orbit below an altitude of 50,000 km. Beyond that it is less
reliable, and beyond 150,000 km it is seriously incomplete. At 150,000
km lunar perturbations are large enough that Keplerian orbits stop being
a good long term approximation.

No-one is officially responsible for knowing what hardware is in
heliocentric orbit or on the other planets, despite the planetary
protection concerns.

As a start to fixing that, I present version 1.0 of DEEPCAT, the Catalog
of Deep Space Objects:

International Space Station
---------------------------

Expedition 61 began at 0737 UTC on Oct 3.

On Sep 24 the 8th H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV), Kounotori 8 (HTV-8), was
placed in LEO by an H-IIB vehicle from Tanegashima. It carries another
set of replacement batteries for the station truss. HTV-8 arrived at the
station on Sep 28; it was grappled by Canadarm-2 at 1112 UTC and berthed
on the Harmony nadir port at 1409 UTC.

On Sep 25 astronauts Oleg Skripochka (Roskosmos), Jessica Meir (NASA), and
Hazza al Mansouri (United Arab Emirates) were launched into orbit aboard Soyuz MS-15
(Soyuz spacecraft 744). The launch vehicle was Soyuz-FG No. 71, the last of the Soyuz-FG
series. Future missions will use the Soyuz-2 series rockets.

Soyuz MS-15 docked with the ISS Zvezda module at 1942 UTC Sep 25 after a 5 hour 45 min flight.

On Sep 29-Oct 1 the Canadarm-2 and the JEM RMS arm were used to move the Exposed Pallet EP-8
from HTV-8 to the Mobile Base System POA, and to move EP-7 from the POA to HTV-8.
EP-7 had been stored on the POA for the past year.

On Oct 3 at 0737 UTC Soyuz MS-12 undocked from the Rassvet module with astronauts Ovchinin,
Hague and Al Mansoori. Soyuz fired its deorbit engine at 1006 UTC; the three modules
separated at 1034 UTC, and the descent module landed near 47 24N 69 34E in Kazakhstan
at 1059 UTC.

On Oct 4 the Canadarm-2 took EP-8 off the POA again and moved it next to
the P6 truss in preparation for spacewalk operations. On Oct 6
astronauts Koch and Morgan, in roles EV-1 and EV-2 and using suits 3004 and 3008 respectively, carried
out US EVA-56. The Quest airlock was depressurized at 1132 UTC and the hatch was
opened at 1138 UTC.  The astronauts then made the following transfers:
NiH battery 0087 was removed from P6 IEA 2B slot 1 at 1306 UTC and installed on EP8 Slot X at 1339 UTC.
  Li-ion battery 0015 was moved from EP8 Slot A to P6 IEA 2B slot 1 from 1406 to 1422 UTC
NiH battery 0093 was moved from P6 IEA 2B slot 2 to EP8 Slot A from 1444 to 1530 UTC.
  Adapter plate SN09 (?) was moved from EP8 Slot A to P6 IEA 2B slot 2 from 1522 to 1550 UTC.
NiH battery 0096 was moved from P6 IEA 2B slot 3 to slot 2, on top of the adapter plate, from 1610 to 1616 UTC.
  Li-ion battery 0005 was moved from EP8 Slot B to P6 IEA 2B slot 3 from 1648 to 1716 UTC.
The astronauts then returned to the airlock with hatch closure at 1835 UTC and repressurization at 1840 UTC.

On Oct 11 US EVA-57 featured Koch and Morgan, this time swapping roles as EV-2 and EV-1.
Quest was depressurized from 1134 to 1823 UTC and the hatch was open from 1137 UTC to 1814 UTC.
During the spacewalk:
  NiH battery 0099 was moved from P6 2B slot 4 to EP8 slot B from 1230 to 1312 UTC.
  Adapter plate SN10? was moved from EP8 slot B to P6 2B slot 4 from 1304 to 1317 UTC.
NiH battery 0100 was moved from P6 2B slot 6 to the adapter plate in slot 4 from 1350 to 1354 UTC.
  Li-ion battery SN17 was moved from EP8 slot D to P6 2B slot 6 from 1421 to 1438 UTC.
  NiH battery 0097 was moved from P6 2B slot 5 to EP8 slot D from 1503 to 1550 UTC.
  Adapter plate SN12 was moved from EP8 slot D to P6 2B slot 5 from 1543 to 1553 UTC.
This completed the work on P6's 2B side, with three Li-ion batteries and 3 adapter plates installed,
four NiH batteries moved to the EP for disposal and two NiH batteries stored on top of adapter plates.

Following the failure of the 2B2 battery charge/discharge unit (BCDU) on
the P6 2B IEA, US EVA-58 with Koch and Meir was added to replace the
BCDU with a spare from ELC-1. The airlock was depressurized at 1132 UTC,
and the hatch opened at 1137 UTC.

Koch amd Meir moved spare BCDU 0028 from ELC1 at 1305 UTC and installed
in in P6 in the 2B2 slot at 1501 UTC. Failed BCDU 011 was removed from
P6 2B2 at 1452 UTC and brought back to the airlock at 1557 UTC.
Following some further minor tasks the crew returned to the airlock with
hatch close at 1851 UTC and beginning of repressurization at 1855 UTC.
This was the first spacewalk in which all of the spacewalkers were
women.

Beidou
------

Two Beidou-3 MEO satellites, M23/24 (DW47/48), were launched to 12-hour orbits on Sep 22.

Yunhai-1-02
-----------

China launched the second Yunhai-1 satellite on Sep 25. The satellite carries
a GNSS radio occultation meteorology payload.

EKS No. 3
----------

Russia launched the third EKS (Tundra) early warning satellite on Sep 26.
The satellite is built by RKK Energia, with overall system integration by Kometa.
It was given the codename Kosmos-2541.

Gaofen 10
---------

The second Gaofen 10 high resolution imaging satellite was launched from Taiyuan on Oct 4
into a 0200LT node sun-synch orbit. The first GF-10 failed to reach orbit in 2016.

Tsubame
--------

The Tsubame (SLATS) low orbit test satellite reentered on Oct 1. Its final orbit was 133 x 147 km.

Kosmos-2535/2536
----------------

Kosmos-2535 and 2536 continue proximity operations. Kosmos-2537 and Kosmos-2538
(objects B and C but we're not sure which is which) have not changed orbit, but in
October several new objects were cataloged in a similar orbit and appear to have
been released from objects B and/or C around Oct 11. They may be debris objects
from a minor collision or sub-payloads for radar calibration (like the ESO test objects
released from the Romb and Kol'tso satellites in the past).

MEV-1/Eutelsat 5WB
------------------

International Launch Services and Khrunichev launched a Proton to supersynchronous transfer
orbit on Oct 9 and deployed two payloads built by Northrop Grumman/Dulles (formerly Orbital Sciences).
Eutelsat W5B is a television satellite for the European operator Eutelsat SA. MEV-1, the Mission
Extension Vehicle, is a Northrop Grumman experimental satellite which will rendezvous and dock with
the Intelsat 901 satellite in GEO in order to extend its operational lifetime.

ICON
----

NASA's Ionospheric Connection Explorer, ICON, was launched on Oct 11. The Northrop Grummann
L-1011 Stargazer carrier aircraft took off from Cape Canaveral's runway 31/13 (the Skid Strip)
at 0031 UTC. After an aborted drop run at 0130 UTC, the L-1011 dropped Pegasus at 29.0N 78.5W
at 0200 UTC. The three-stage solid rocket ignited after a 5 second free fall, and reached orbit 11 minutes later.
ICON has an optical interferometer, ultraviolet imagers and an ion velocity meter to study the thermosphere
and ionosphere.

Palisade
--------

AstroDigital's 16U technology development cubesat Palisade was launched by Electron flight 9 (mission
name As The Crow Flies) into Electron's highest orbit yet. The satellite was placed in a 1207 x 1225 km orbit,
with the second stage and two pieces of debris in a 309 x 1200 km x 87.9 deg orbit. The kick stage
was deorbited.

TJS 4
-----

Tongxing Jishu Shiyan 4 was launched from Xichang on Oct 17 to geotransfer orbit. The satellite
is described as a communications techology satellite, but may be a signals intelligence satellite.

IOTA NEWS ---> The logs for the  IOTA Contest 2019 island stations  have now
been added to the IOTA database  and  are available for  QSO matching.  IOTA
Management is "waiting for further information from B2/BY1CQ, BI4IX, DL0SOP,
R0MZ/P, SA7J, SP3A,  SQ6NEJ and  SV8/LZ1ABC  before these activations can be
accepted". Record-holders  who  have  made  IOTA contacts in an IOTA contest
after 2003, can claim  credit  for  them  without  submitting QSLs, provided
that the contact  details  match.  Go  to  https://iota-world.org/,  log in,
select "Add Contest QSOs" under the "My IOTA" tab, and then upload your .cbr
or .log file(s).

VP8/VP8DXU ---> Beginning on 24 October,  team members  will meet near  Palo
Alto (California) "to consolidate,  integrate,  test and  pack the equipment
for its transport to Punta Arenas, Chile".
Similar to  their  Ducie Island (VP6D)  plan,  "the antenna team  designed a
strategy that considers  Signy Island's location  and  topography.  Vertical
Dipole  Arrays  will  be  directed  towards  Europe, over  water.  For other
geographies the topology is less suitable for VDAs so instead Moxons will be
used. Low band vertical antennas will be used for all geographies".
As for  fundraising,  44 clubs/foundations  and  over  350 individuals  have
supported  the project  so far.  "We still have a long way to go",  the team
says, "but  we're  encouraged by  the response.  If you or your club  aren't
listed on our website, please consider a donation".

Product Announcement: DXtreme Monitor Log 12™

Product Announcement
DXtreme Monitor Log 12™

DXtreme Software™ has released a new version of its popular logging program for radio monitoring enthusiasts - DXtreme Monitor Log 12 - which lets listeners and DXers log the stations they’ve heard using features that enhance their monitoring experiences.

User’s Choice of Country Formats
When starting Monitor Log 12 the first time as a new user - or when creating a new secondary database - users can select the country format they want to use: NASWA Countries or ARRL Entities. Country information is fully editable when changes occur.

Finding Broadcast Stations to Monitor
The Schedule Checker lets users import schedules from Aoki, EiBi, and FCC AM web sites and display schedule data according to the filter criteria they specify. A list box lets users switch between schedule types. And users can filter schedule information by band, frequency, station, country, time of day, language, and more.

When the What’s On Now? function is activated, the schedule refreshes automatically at the top of each hour for Aoki and EiBi schedules.

For each schedule item, Schedule Checker queries the Monitor Log 12 database to let users know – through user-defined, foreground and background display colors – whether they need to monitor a station for a brand-new or verified country. Schedule Checker also displays bearing and distance, runs optional Afreet Ham CAP propagation predictions, draws optional Afreet DX Atlas azimuth plots, tunes supported radios to schedule frequencies when users double-click schedule items, and starts log entries for scheduled stations monitored.

Finding Amateur Radio Stations to Monitor
Monitor Log 12 integrates with optional Afreet Band Master to let users see, on its graphical interface, where hams are operating. Monitor Log 12 supplies Band Master with an Entity Needed List based on the user’s Monitor Log database, making it possible for Band Master to indicate the stations whose entities (countries) users need to monitor.

Finding Utility Stations to Monitor
A Links menu provides convenient access to user-specified blogs and web sites that can inform users as to where utility and other stations may be operating.

Logging Stations
Monitor Log 12 lets users log all kinds of stations - radio, television, broadcast, Amateur Radio, utility, military, and more! And it lets users log stations across the radio spectrum - from long wave, to medium wave, to short wave, and beyond. Users can also select the display of kHz or MHz frequencies.

The Last Log Entries Grid on the Monitor Log window shows up to 5000 of the most recent log entries added. Its records can be sorted, and double-clicking records displays detailed data on the Monitor Log window. Users can resize the grid columns and scroll horizontally to columns that do not appear initially. Users can also display a larger, resizable Last Log Entries window. A Properties window lets users change the order of columns, the number of log entries to display, and the font and color attributes of grids and other program components, such as: Content Tabs for describing the content monitored, Script Editor for creating and editing scripts, Direct Tune interface for tuning radios, and Comments for typing ad hoc comments.

Reporting Reception
Users can create customized paper and e-mail reception reports for sending to stations plus club report entries for reporting catches to clubs and magazines.

When users add or display a log entry, Monitor Log 12 prepares a post announcing their DX catch and displays it on the Social Media Post tab. From there, users can drag the post to their favorite social media web sites to share their catch with others.

Using the Script Editor window, users can create and edit scripts that format reception reports, eReports, and social media posts to their liking. The software prompts users to select the script they want to use. Dozens of scripts come with Monitor Log 12.

Users can also print SWL and Address labels on industry-standard label stock, and send eQSL requests to hams automatically via the popular https://www.eqsl.cc site.

Imaging
Improv Imaging lets users associate ad hoc images with log entries using Capture, Scan, and Clipboard functions. Captures of stations received on digital applications, waterfall displays, facsimile and Amateur TV pictures are popular. The Improv Imaging tab and Application let users view images anytime, and an Improv Image Explorer lets them peruse their entire collection and display associated log entries. A QSL Imaging facility functions the same as Improv Imaging for associating QSLs.

Other Features
Rig Control - Retrieves the frequency and mode from supported radios and permits tuning from the Schedule Checker and Direct Tune interface. Rig control is provided through integration with Afreet Omni-Rig and SDR applications like HDSDR, SDR Console, and SDRuno.
Audio Archiving - Lets users maintain an audio archive of stations heard.
Reporting and Searching - Produces Performance, Stations, and Log Entry reports that track the performance and progress of the user’s monitoring station in its entirety. The software lets users tailor the appearance of reports plus FTP them to user-provided Web space for remote access and sharing. Reports can integrate with Afreet DX Atlas to create pin maps. Searches allow access to all monitoring data in a variety of formats.

ADIF Import - Lets users import ADIF-formatted log entries into their database.
eQSL.cc Inbox Update - Updates user’s database with eQSL.cc Inbox verifications.
Documentation - Context-sensitive Procedural Help, Field Help, and Microhelp are accessible per window to provide instructions quickly. A web-based Information Center is accessible from the Help menu for late-breaking assistance, and Installation Instructions and a Getting Started Guide are delivered in PDF format with the software.

Operating Systems, Pricing, Contact Information
DXtreme Monitor Log 12 runs in 32- and 64-bit versions of Microsoft® Windows® 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista®, and XP. It retails for $94.99 USD worldwide for electronic distribution. Pricing for CD versions and upgrading users is available on our Web site.
