3D2/R, ROTUMA. Antoine,
3D2AG, announced the following November 1st, on
QRZ.com: "The next 3D2AG/p
Rotuma Island one-op Dxpedition is planned
around the 28th November 2019 to
January 5th 2020, weather and transport
permitting. Latest shipping news is
that a boat shall depart Suva around
the 25th of November. Focus will be on
low bands including 160m, 80m and
60m, with QRO when required. Beware of
pirates impersonating the Rotuma
expeditions, especially in EU! There will be
NO internet access during
the expedition; FT8 logs will be uploaded to
ClubLog AFTER the expedition
and CW/SSB/RTTY contacts will be recorded on
paper logs as customary for
this OP. Efforts are being made now to source a
backup generator, fuel
and pack antennas / gear ready for the end of the
month."
Activity will be on 160-6 meters using CW, SSB, RTTY, FT8(FT4) and
SSTV.
A tentative "Rotuma Operating Schedule" is listed on QRZ.com by
bands,
frequencies, times (UTC) by regional areas and suggested headings
(LP/SP).
The QSL information is as follows: Via 3D2AG, using PayPal to
address
(nyeurt@gmail.com) [preferred,
safer] / direct for CW/SSB/RTTY and Club-
Log's OQRS (FT8/Digimodes only).
Donations welcome to assist with generator
and fuel procurement for low bands
QRO operation. NO LoTW.
3Y0I BOUVET ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (3Y0I
Preparations Resumed). Excerpts
from an announcement on the 3Y0I Bouvet
Island Web page, under "NEWS",
(https://bouvetoya.org/) reports the following
interesting facts and
details of the second attempt to go to Bouvet Island:
* "The 1st attempt took yet another toll".... "we had to cover all
costs
involved"... "it’s been a privately funded venture from the
very
beginning, we spent as much as 225.000 USDs from our personal
funds
so far. Only 9% of our DXpedition budged got covered by donations,
so
the final impact on our private monies is huge".
* "We estimate
that the second attempt would be around 170.000 USDs in
total. It’s less
than our initial budget as we have collected a lot
of important equipment
already + went under necessary extra-paid
training + secured many things
logistically, too".... "we have already
secured half of the required
budget to go back to Bouvet. But after
the last aftermath and considering
the next suitable time-frames with
safe weather conditions at far South
Atlantic Ocean, we’re simply
unable to repair our budget with personal
funding this fast. We face
a risk to postpone the expedition,
unfortunately. Yes, we did our
best to make it happen last March. Yes,
we’re still up to take a
second chance. But this time it may only take
place if we receive
financial support to cover at least half of the
missing budget, which
is 85.000 USDs, to make 3Y0I coming true. And
here’s how you can..."
* "To make the fundraising more attractive, once we
reach the required
minimum of 85k USDs, we will give donors a chance to
win something
special". They list three things on their Web page.
*
The 3Y0I team now has a "GoFundMe" page to donate at:
https://www.gofundme.com/f/3y0i-bouvet-island-expedition
It also contains details and pictures of the Bouvet project.

STANDARD TIME. Did you remember
to change your clocks? Countries who
observe Daylight Saving Time (DST),
which took place on Sunday, March
10th, are now expected to move their "local
clocks" backward 1 hour on
Sunday, November 3rd, from 2:00 AM local time to
1:00 AM. In 2020, Day-
light Saving Time (DST) will again go into effect on
Sunday, March 8th,
at 2:00 AM local time. For the history and details about
ST and DST, as
well as an interesting map of the world (showing the countries
who observe
DST), see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_time

ADDED
NOTE: Hopefully, all amateur radio operators know NOT to change
their
GMT/UTC/ZULU clocks. However, since most operators usually set
their
computers to local time, some may have to change their settings on
"some"
ham radio software (ex. logging, propagation, DXTelnet, etc..)
programs.

VP6R PITCAIRN ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (Update). Glenn, W0GJ, sent
out the
following press release on Thursday, October 31st: "This morning we
passed
80,000 contacts. Both the upper bands and the lower bands have had
good
propagation. The team spirits have been high as the pileups continue.
Many
all-time new ones are in the logs.
We were QRT for two hours this
morning to completely dismantle and pack
up the stations and antennas at the
old Radio Site. The view from there
is breath-taking, with a 360 degree view
of the ocean from 900 feet above
sea level! The propagation was also
breath-taking from there! The DX
Engineering team did an incredible job
fabricating our 90-foot 160M
antenna. It went up and came down easily. The DX
Engineering falling
derricks for the yagi masts made raising and lowering
(and repairing)
the yagis very easy. There will be pictures on our
website:
https://pitcairndx.com
We are back on the
air at our base camp 40-10 meters for another 24
hours before we must QRT to
pack up for catching the Braveheart."
----------------------------------------------------------
Glenn, W0GJ,
also sent out the following press release late Saturday
evening, November
2nd, titled "VP6R Final Press Release 2 November 2019":
The VP6R DXpedition
is now history with 82,700 Q’s in the log. We had
excellent weather for
dismantling our stations & antennas. We have just
finished packing
everything for the return trip home. The Braveheart is
transporting us to
Mangareva tomorrow. It will then go on to Punta Arenas,
Chile, transporting
some equipment we used for the South Orkney DXpedition.
The oldest Pitcairn
resident passed away yesterday. We attended the
funeral this morning. He was
laid to rest right next to Tom Christian,
VP6TC. It was a very moving
experience.
We have helped two local hams get back on the air. Meralda
Warren,
VP6MW, has a new 40/30/15M vertical and is set up now to operate
FT8.
Mike Warren, VP6AZ, has a repaired vertical and new beam. They are
both
on the air again! VP6MW called CQ just once using FT8 on 15M. She had
an
instant pileup. I guess there is still a need for VP6 Pitcairn even
after
VP6R went QRT!
We still miss Ralph, K0IR, who did almost all of
the organization and
preparation for the VP6R DXpedition, but was unable to
go at the last
minute. I stepped in literally 5 days before leaving home. The
success
of VP6R is almost solely due to the details Ralph planned for. If
there
was ever a DXpedition on autopilot, VP6R was it. THANKS, Ralph!!!!
Thanks to everyone who worked us to make the VP6R DXpedition such a
success
at the bottom of the sunspot cycle.
Visit (www.pitcairndx.com) for QSLing details. It
will be at least 7-10
days before most of the team gets home. OQRS will be
activated then and
is the best way to receive a QSL card. Eventually our
entire log will be
uploaded to LoTW. QSL via K9CT.

HuskySat-1 Successfully Lifted into Space
A Cygnus cargo spacecraft carrying the University of Washington's
HuskySat-1 was successfully launched atop a Northrup Grumman Antares
rocket Saturday morning, November 2, 1459 UTC.
The Cygnus spacecraft will dock with the ISS on November 4. Cygnus
is then scheduled to depart the ISS on January 13, 2020 and raise
its orbit to approximately 500 km where HuskySat-1 and SwampSat will
be deployed. After deployment, HuskySat-1's 1200 bps BPSK beacon on
435.800 MHz should be active.(This beacon is decodable with the
latest release of FoxTelem.) HuskySat-1 is expected to run its
primary mission (testing a pulsed plasma thruster and experimental
24 GHz data transmitter) for thirty days. The satellite will then
be turned over to AMSAT for Amateur Radio operation, featuring a
30 kHz wide 145 to 435 MHz linear transponder for SSB/CW
communications.

ARISS Contact Opportunities - Call for Proposals
- Current Proposal Window is October 1, 2019 to November 30, 2019
- Upcoming Proposal Window is February 1, 2020 to March 31, 2020
The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Program
is seeking formal and informal education institutions and
organizations, individually or working together, to host an Amateur
Radio contact with a crew member on board the ISS. ARISS anticipates
that the contact for proposals submitted in the proposal window now
open would be held between July 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020. ARISS
is happy to announce a second proposal window will open
February 1, 2020 for contacts that would be held between
January 1, 2021 and June 30, 2021. Crew scheduling and ISS orbits
will determine the exact contact dates. To maximize these radio
contact opportunities, ARISS is looking for organizations that will
draw large numbers of participants and integrate the contact into a
well-developed education plan.
The deadline to submit proposals for contacts between July 1, 2020
and December 31, 2020 is November 30, 2019. The proposal window for
contacts between January 1, 2021 and June 30, 2021 will open on
February 1, 2020 and close on March 31, 2020. Proposal information
and documents can be found at www.ariss.org. Two ARISS Introductory
Webinar sessions will be held on November 7, 2019. The first is at
6:00 PM ET and the second is at 9:00 PM ET. The same material will
be covered during both sessions, so choose the session that best fits
your schedule. The Eventbrite link to sign up is
https://ariss-introductory-webinar-fall-2019.eventbrite.com
The Opportunity
Crew members aboard the International Space Station will participate
in scheduled Amateur Radio contacts. These radio contacts are
approximately 10 minutes in length and allow students to interact
with the astronauts through a question-and-answer session.
An ARISS contact is a voice-only communication opportunity via
Amateur Radio between astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the space
station and classrooms and communities. ARISS contacts afford
education audiences the opportunity to learn firsthand from
astronauts what it is like to live and work in space and to learn
about space research conducted on the ISS. Students also will have an
opportunity to learn about satellite communication, wireless
technology, and radio science. Because of the nature of human
spaceflight and the complexity of scheduling activities aboard the
ISS, organizations must demonstrate flexibility to accommodate
changes in dates and times of the radio contact.
Amateur Radio organizations around the world with the support of NASA
and space agencies in Russia, Canada, Japan and Europe present
educational organizations with this opportunity. The ham radio
organizations' volunteer efforts provide the equipment and
operational support to enable communication between crew on the ISS
and students around the world using Amateur Radio.

FoxTelem Version 1.08r Released
Chris Thompson, G0KLA has released Version 1.08r of FoxTelem. This
release provides several enhancements and needed changes for FOX-1E
and HuskySat, a partnership with the University of Washington.
Users will need to download this version to successfully decode data
from the two new spacecraft which will transmit BPSK telemetry on
70cm. (Chris suggests now is a good time to put up a 70cm antenna
if you do not have one!)
After version 1.08p was released earlier this week, IC-9700 users
immediately noticed difficulties. Version 1.08r was immediately
released. Chris notes:
" There were two issues that prevented good decodes from the IC-9700:
1 - The IF output of the IC-9700 is not a true IQ signal and you have
both a lower and upper sideband image. One has the bits flipped
upside down. Historically FoxTelem has coped with the bits with
either sense, even though only one is "correct", so 1.07 decoded
fine from the wrong image. I had introduced a bug that meant the
"bit flip" check was not run. That code is back in.
2 - There was also an issue where the algorithm that finds the signal
was not being run if SatPC32 position was being read. That was a
common configuration for IC-9700 owners, so it compounded the
problem. The code is now fixed."
Key changes include the following:
- PSK decoders are easier to select.
- Automatically change the band from 2m to 70cm and the mode from
FSK to PSK if needed (and enabled).
- Allows default mode to be set for each spacecraft.
- No longer overwrites the user settings (e.g. as max/min frequency)
when spacecraft files are updated.
- Saves the properties whenever they are changed (rather than just
at exit).
- Allows the user to change the display name for a spacecraft without
changing the KEPS name.
- Prevents FOXDB from being corrupted when power restarted.
- Better memory management so that long running FoxTelem sessions
do not end up out of memory.
- Allows MAX and MIN records to be displayed in table on the
telemetry tab.
- Shows the Capture Date for the record being displayed (e.g. RT,
MAX, MIN).
- Deletes existing files when server data is downloaded.
- Ties the STP date more accurately to the position of the SYNC word
in the bit buffer to avoid stamping frames with the same date.
- Many small bugs and crashes fixed.

A full list of changes can be found at

- Download http://amsat.us/FoxTelem/linux/FoxTelem_1.08p_linux.tar.gz
to the Desktop using the browser on your FIAB.
- Double-click the file to extract it to a directory(folder) named
"FoxTelem_1.08r_linux".
- Next, stop the running FoxTelem and edit the file on your desktop
named "StartFoxTelem". (Right-click and choose Text Editor.)
- About the third line from the bottom, change "foxtelem_1.07_linux"
