ARLP020 Propagation de K7RA
No sunspots appeared last week.
The previous seven days had only one
big sunspot group on one day, with a
sunspot number of 35. Over the
seven day period this averaged out to a
sunspot number of 5, so
average daily sunspot numbers declined from 5 to 0
this week.
Average daily solar flux also declined, by one point from 69.5
to
68.5.
Geomagnetic indicators were quiet, with average daily
planetary A
index declining from 5.1 to 4.1, and mid-latitude A index from 5
to
4.7.
Spaceweather.com reports that the percentage of days with
no
sunspots so far in 2020 (76%) is very close to 2019 (77%).
Every
day I look at STEREO https://stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov/ to see
if
there are any hints of activity over the horizon. Each 30
degree
division on that display represents about 55 hours, and currently
on
May 14 I see a bright possibly active area about 30 degrees over
the
solar horizon.
Predicted solar flux is 68 on May 15 to 21, 69 on
May 22, 70 on May
23 to 31, 68 on June 1 to 13, 70 on June 14 to 27 and 68 on
June 28.
Predicted planetary A index is 5 on May 15 to 18, 8 on May 19
and
20, 5 on May 21 to June 8, 8 on June 9 and 10, 5 on June 11 to
13,
then 10 and 8 on June 14 and 15, and 5 on June 16 to
28.
Geomagnetic activity forecast for the period May 15 til June 9,
2020
from F.K. Janda, OK1HH.
"Geomagnetic field will be
quiet on:
May 26, June 2 to 5
quiet to unsettled on: May 16, 25, 27 to 31
quiet to
active on: (May 15, 20 to 22, 24, June 1, 6 to 8)
unsettled to active on:
(May 17 to 19, 23)
active to disturbed: no disturbances
predicted
Solar wind will intensify on: May (18 to 21, 23,) 24, June (6
and 7)
- Parenthesis means lower probability of activity
enhancement.
- The predictability of changes remains lower as there are
no
indicators."
I've noticed recently that even with very little
sunspot activity,
there is plenty of activity on the air. Checking FT8
communications
on https://www.pskreporter.info/pskmap.html
I can see lots of weak
signal communication over marginal paths, even on 12,
10 and 6
meters. I also get reports from readers, and see reports on a
local
DXer email list, and everyone seems more active of late.
I
suspect much of this activity is related to the COVID-19 pandemic,
and the
great number of operators isolating at home.
The May 7 ARRL Eclectic Tech
podcast (listen at
https://bit.ly/2zCjRRu) features a story
(starting at minute 10:57)
about a medical research project using distributed
computing
employing idle microprocessor cycles in volunteer's
personal
computers to aid in medical research. Called Folding at Home
(https://foldingathome.org/start-folding/)
participants can form
teams to do the work, and keep score. It has recently
been
re-positioned to aid research on COVID-19.
Twenty years ago I
started a folding team, dedicated to the memory
of the former holder of my
call sign, K7RA. You can view the stats
on our team at https://stats.foldingathome.org/team/10566.
If you
can join us, download the software from https://foldingathome.org/
and during
installation please dedicate your work to team number
10566.
I was
aware of the Carrington Event (see https://bit.ly/35YRadA),
the huge solar
storm of 1859, but there was another big one, 99
years ago this week, that
also set fire to telegraph offices and
caused general mayhem. See https://bit.ly/3fVaywK and
https://bit.ly/2Z5muG3.
Ken Brown, N4SO
(EM50) in Grand Bay, Alabama reports unusual 15
meter propagation at an odd
time, after midnight where he is. On May
11, using FT8 he heard VE7SKY (CN89)
at 0602 UTC and then 8C2WFH,
(OI53) in Indonesia at 0649 UTC.
Mark
Bell, K3MSB of Airville, Pennsylvania wrote on May 8: "10M Has
been open the
past few days. I've worked stations in TX and CA on
Thursday May 7th, and
stations in MN and WA on May 8th, using CW and
100 watts. It was classic Es
propagation. I had no RBN reports for
the 7th, but very nice ones on the 8th.
Several other stations were
calling me on the 8th but I was unable to work
them."
On May 11 Mark wrote:
"Here's an update to my update.
Between May 7-10, I worked 10 states
on 10M CW. Single hop sporadic-E into
TX, MN, FL, TN, MO, LA, and WI
and double hop into CA, WA and ID, all CW. I
heard quite a few more
stations calling me but I was unable to work
them."
Marked mentioned RBN. More info: http://www.reversebeacon.net/
Jon
Jones, N0JK wrote from Kansas: "Es May 11. Caught J68HZ (St.
Lucia) on 50.313
MHz at 2345z on 2x Es. Note the report, -24 dB! So
far no major openings like
on April 15, but overall Es season
starting to pick up."
Danny Miller,
KB8W wrote: "There was a nice Es opening on 6 meters
during the afternoon and
evening of May 8 from my UP of Michigan QTH
(EN57) to Idaho, western Montana,
Alberta and Saskatchewan. Es is
common in the central USA during the summer
months but it is very
early to have it happen so far north in early May, the
Es cloud
appeared to be over North and South Dakota.
I worked 12
stations over about ten hours, using FT8 on 50.313 MHz.
I run only 50 W to a
5 element Yagi on 6 meters, so it is great to
have some extended propagation
to help me work those western grid
squares!"
K0ZN wrote from De Soto,
Kansas: "May 7th had some exceptional HF
conditions. I have not heard things
this good in several years. What
got my attention was when I turned the radio
on about 11 PM, WWV was
pounding in at 35 db over S-9 on 10 and 15 MHz and
S-9 on 20 and S-7
on 25 MHz here in Kansas City; that is only a 550 mile
path, quite
short for 20 and 25 MHz at 11 PM CST! I got on 10M and heard
strong
west coast signals and worked a KH6 running 30 W to a vertical
with
good signals both ways. The impressive thing was hearing a UA6
who
was S-9 working a Polish station! 30 M was clearly wide open to
a
large part of the world... at midnight CST. One can only hope this
is an
omen of better things coming on HF."

CAMPBELL ISLAND (ZL9) ---> "The Perseverance DX Group (PDXG) has some
unfinished business". Several PDXG members participated in the 2012 ZL9HR
DXpedition to Campbell Island that was cut short by weather. "After their
Successful VP8PJ South Orkney Islands 2020 DXpedition, PDXG is pleased to
announce their intention to activate the New Zealand Sub Antarctic Islands
(ZL9), Clublog #24 Most Wanted, in the 2021-2022 timeframe.
The plan includes 160-10m operation, CW/SSB/RTTY/FT8, with an emphasis on
160, 80, 60, 40 and, propagation dependent, 12 and 10 metres. The landing

CQ CONTEST HALL OF FAME ---> Established in 1986, the CQ Contest Hall of
Fame honours those contesters who not only excel in personal performance but
who also "give back" to the hobby in outstanding ways. CQ Contesting Editor
David Siddall (K3ZJ) conducted a virtual induction ceremony at the conclu-
sion of the daylong 2020 Contest University webinar on 14 May. This is the
37th annual induction and the first to be conducted online. The 2020
inductees to the CQ Contest Hall of Fame are:
* Geoffrey Howard, W0CG/PJ2DX, who purchased and restored the PJ9JT contest
station in 2000 that had been owned by CQ Contest Hall of Famer John
Thompson, W1BIH/PJ9JT. The location was named "Signal Point" and the PJ2T
callsign pays homage to PJ9JT. Geoff established the Caribbean Contest
Consortium to help manage and maintain the station, and has consistently
made the station available to guest operators over the years, including
serving as host station several times for young operators participating in
the Dave Kalter Youth DX Adventure program. He has also worked closely
with VERONA, Curacao's national ham radio society. Geoff served for more
than 25 years in the United States Air Force, retiring as a colonel;
worked for RCA and the Federal Aviation Administration, and taught in the
Graduate School of Management at Kent State University in Ohio.
* Willard "Bill" Myers, K1GQ, a pioneer of computer-based systems for de-
signing and switching antennas at contest stations, designed the Cushcraft
"Skywalker" series of monoband Yagis, helped build the early PacketCluster
network and served as mentor to several of today's most prominent con-
testers, including K1AR, K1DG, K1JX, and others. Bill was also a major
behind-the-scenes force at the 2014 World Radiosport Team Championship
(WRTC) competition in Massachusetts, and is currently providing support
and refinement of the SkookumLogger contest logging program for Apple
computers.
* Gene Zimmerman, W3ZZ (SK), was a major force in VHF contesting as well as
an accomplished HF contester. He was a member of both ARRL's and CQ's con-
test committees at various times between 1972 and 2012, was QST magazine's
VHF Editor for nearly a decade, and was CQ Contest magazine's VHF colum-
nist as well. Gene took over the struggling CQ World Wide VHF Contest in
1999, reinvented it as a 6- and 2-meter only event and sparked its growth
into a truly worldwide competition. He was also instrumental in organizing
the mid-Atlantic VHF contesting group that became known as the K8GP Grid
Pirates.
Registered participants in the virtual Contest University webinar were able
to view the induction ceremony live. It was also "simulcast" on DX Engi-
neering's YouTube channel, where it is stored for later viewing:
https://www.youtube.com/user/DXEngineering/featured (the recording of the
ceremony starts at 09:15:30).
CQ is issuing a separate news release this year - with separate release
times - for each of the CQ Halls of Fame (Amateur Radio, Contest and DX) due
to disparities in scheduling induction events. The DX Hall of Fame induction
is planned to air live on Ham Nation (https://twit.tv/shows/ham-nation) on
20 May at 21 EDT (1 UTC on 21 May), with the on demand download available
within 24 hours.

Entities. DXpeditions completed from March 2019 through February 2020 were
eligible for this year's award, which has been presented to the TI9A DXpedi-
tion to Coco's Island (February 2020). Watch the video of the announcement
on https://www.swodxa.org/dxpedition-of-the-year/.
QSL 9J2LA ---> "I am still waiting for the 9J2LA cards to arrive from UX5UO
QSL Print", Charles (M0OXO) reported on 12 May. A certain delay was expected
"due to Covid-19 issues", but apparently "there are more restrictions on the
route between Ukraine and the UK. Labels and envelopes are all ready here, I
just need the cards to arrive and they will be mailed within 48 hours of
receipt". Please be patient and "stop emailing me asking about the position
of the cards and LoTW".
QSL EY8MM ---> Mike Cizek, W0VTT is the new QSL manager for Nodir, EY8MM.
Mike will have all logs dating back to 1 January 1994. A batch of new cards
has been ordered, but it might take some time before Mike receives them.
QSL VP8PJ ---> The QSL cards arrived from ON5UR QSL Print Service, Tim
(M0URX) reported on 12 May, "so the job of labeling the cards and stuffing
the envelopes begins. ALL cards requested up to the mailing date will all be
sent in the mailing and a press release from the VP8PJ team will inform you
when the job is done" The OQRS on https://www.m0urx.com/ is open, "so you
still have time to make your QSL request"

HuskySat-1 Designated HuskySat-OSCAR 107 (HO-107)
On November 2, 2019, the HuskySat-1 cubesat launched on the Cygnus NG-
12 mission from Wallops Island, Virginia, USA. The satellite was con-
structed by the Husky Satellite Lab at the University of Washington,
and utilizes an AMSAT-constructed radio system for primary communica-
tions. Deployed from the Cygnus vehicle on January 31, 2020 after de-
parting the ISS, HuskySat-1 began a 3-month educational mission. Upon
completion of that mission, the satellite began operation of a V/u
linear transponder in amateur service.
At the request of the Husky Satellite Lab and AMSAT teams, AMSAT here-
by designates HuskySat-1 as HuskySat-OSCAR 107 (HO-107). We congratu-
late the Husky Satellite Lab, thank them for their contribution to the
amateur satellite community, and wish them continued success on this
and future projects.

3Y0I (BOUVET), T22T (TUVALU) AND T33T (BANABA) DXPEDITION NEWS. The Rebel
DX Group reports on FaceBook (https://www.facebook.com/rebeldxgroup):
Unfortunately, our plans regarding activating Banaba Island and Tuvalu
has been affected by the current COVID-19 situation - just like in case
of many other DXpeditions around the world. We're forced to postpone the
DXpedition, but it's not canceled. No worries! We'll resume our plans
once the island would become accessible again. Meanwhile, we keep an eye
on any possibilities to continue our plans in terms of activation Bouvet
Island at the end of this year. Surprisingly, the long wait until the
end of 2020 may not affect our plans at all and we'll be able to continue
with our initial 3Y0I plans without any disruption. We still miss a portion
of our necessary budget to activate Bouvet. Just like in case of many
other top-most-wanted-DXCC DXpeditions, it can't happen without your
support. We kindly ask for any possible donations via our GFM page at:
https://www.gofundme.com/f/3y0i-bouvet-island-expedition
Don't forget to add your callsign in the donation form. Once donated,
your callsign would automatically be listed in the donors' list there.

LA7AWW via LA4O (by the Bureau). Activity this past weekend (May 8-10th),
reminding the efforts by LA7A during WW2 (thereby the special callsign
LA7A + WW = LA7AWW), when he was transmitting messages on behalf of
the home guard. However, he was beamed in by the Nazi occupants, and
killed. LA7AWW will be operating portable from the mountain top where
LA7A was transmitting and killed in March 1945. Equipment will also
include radios being used during WW2.

NEW QSL ROUTE FOR EY8MM. There is a new QSL Manager for EY8MM. QSL via
W0VTT. Mike, W0VTT, will have all logs for EY8MM starting back to
Jan. 1, 1994.
QSL ROUTE. Vasiliy, RW6HS, informs OPDX that he is the QSL Manager for
the following: D075AM, D075DB, D075DO, D075EN, D075HZ, D075IL, D075MK,
D075P, D075SK, D075SN, D075SM, D075ST, D075TR, D075YS and D075ZG
VP8PJ QSL STATUS. Gene, K5GS, reports: The VP8PJ cards are printed and
were shipped from ON5UR QSL Print Services in Belgium to Tim, M0URX,
in the UK. Tim has the tracking numbers and after customs processing
expects the cards to be delivered soon. The envelopes, labels and pre-
printed postage are prepared and awaiting the cards. Once in hand the
"stuffing" process will begin. Until the Covid-19 lock down in the UK
is lifted Tim will probably have to do this work alone, it will take
longer than usual to complete. The initial mailing will include all
the VP8PJ confirmation requests in the system through the mailing date.
Bureau cards will be bulk shipped directly to the inbound bureaus early
next year.... 73, GS K5GS
