RadFxSat (Fox-1B) Launch Delayed; AMSAT Asks for Patience

The launch of the Delta II vehicle carrying RadFxSat (Fox-1B) and other payloads has been delayed, due to a faulty battery on the booster, United Launch Alliance (ULA) announced on November 6. The launch now is scheduled for no earlier than Tuesday, November 14. RadFxSat is one of four CubeSats making up the NASA ELaNa XIV mission, riding as secondary payloads aboard the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS)-1 mission, which will launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California.

RadFxSat is a partnership with Vanderbilt University's Institute for Space and Defense Electronics (ISDE) and hosts four payloads for the study of radiation effects on commercial off-the-shelf components. It will carry a Fox-1 style FM U/V repeater with an uplink on 435.250 MHz (67.0 Hz CTCSS) and a downlink on 145.960 MHz. Satellite and experiment telemetry will be downlinked via the DUV subaudible telemetry stream, which can be decoded using FoxTelem software

AMSAT Vice-President Engineering, Jerry Buxton, N0JY, said RadFxSat/Fox-1B will automatically come up in beacon mode, transmitting a beacon and voice ID ("RadFxSat Safe Mode") every 2
minutes, starting about 50 minutes after deployment. He said AMSATcommand stations will want to see voltage and current data to determine that the spacecraft is healthy and to conduct various tests before opening it up for general use.

Telemetry should begin about 55 minutes after deployment. "[F]or the next 72-96 hours at least, as we look for successful startup, watch the general health and function as the satellite begins to acclimate to space, and perform the on orbit checkout," Buxton said. Ground stations are invited to continue uploading received telemetry for the life of the satellite.

Those using FoxTelem to capture telemetry are asked to check "Upload to Server" in the software's settings and make sure that ground station parameters are provided. "You can help AMSAT and everyone waiting to get on the air with RadFxSat tremendously, by capturing RadFxSat telemetry," Buxton said.

In the initial beacon mode, the transmitter is limited to 10 seconds "on" time, followed by a 2-minute "off" cycle. "If we are seeing good data from user telemetry data, it is likely when it comes over
the US for the first good pass, we will command it from beacon mode to normal safe mode, which then puts RadFxSat in full, but still safe mode, operation and transmits a full two frames of  telemetry," Buxton said.

Buxton called on the satellite community to be "polite and patient" as RadFxSat is commissioned.

"The on-orbit check-out procedure is similar to Fox-1A/AO-85 and could be completed in as little as a few days, if we have the cooperation of the users," he said. "It is very important - not to mention just plain good amateur operating practice - to refrain from using the transponder uplink, so we can do the on-orbit tests, including when we turn on transponder mode for testing. I can't stress enough, the importance of this cooperation, not just for us but for all users, simply having a little patience so we can conduct the tests as quickly and accurately as possible."

Buxton said AMSAT would "make it broadly known" when the transponder is available for general use. "If you hear someone on the transponder, please don't assume that it is open for general use,"
he said. "Check the AMSAT website, Facebook, Twitter, to be sure you're not accidentally jumping in and unwittingly interfering with the commissioning process."

FalconSAT-3 Now Open for Amateur Radio Use

The Air Force Academy satellite FalconSAT-3 is now open for Amateur Radio use as a digital store-and-forward system. Built in 2005 and 2006 by cadets and faculty in the Space Systems Research Center at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, FalconSAT-3 was launched in 2007.

The satellite has completed its scientific and training missions, and the Academy now is making it available for Amateur Radio use. The Packet Bulletin Board System operates at 9600 baud with a
145.840 MHz uplink/435.103 MHz downlink. Output power is 1 W, and the downlink is continuously on. Digipeating is enabled for live QSOs, but unattended digipeating operation is not authorized at this time.

ARISS Equipment on SpaceX Launch

Included as part of today's successful launch of the SpaceX Dragon vehicle to ISS is an ARISS Ericsson 2 meter VHF radio.  This radio will replace the Ericsson radio that failed a few months ago.  The VHF radio is used for school group contacts and amateur packet radio in the Columbus module.  Once the Dragon vehicle is berthed to ISS, the Ericsson will be unstowed and, at some point, installed in Columbus, replacing the UHF radio that is now supporting APRS packet and some school contacts.

Our thanks to SpaceX on an outstanding and historic flight from Kennedy Space Center's Launch Pad 39A, where many Space Shuttle missions  and nearly all the Apollo moon missions were launched.  We also would like to thank our ARISS benefactors-NASA and CASIS, the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space.  And, of course, our amateur radio long-time sponsors-our national amateur radio organizations around the world, including the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) in the US, and our international AMSAT organizations, including AMSAT-NA.

Two projects with AMSAT ties selected for NASA launches

Two cubesat missions with ties to AMSAT have been selected as part of the eighth round of the NASA CubeSat Launch Initiative. These spacecraft are eligible for placement on a launch manifest after final negotiations, depending on the availability of a flight opportunity.

TJREVERB is a cubesat from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, in Alexandria, Virginia. This satellite will include an AMSAT Fox mode U/v FM radio system, and will be capable of serving as an analog FM repeater.

HuskySat-1 from the University of Washington in Seattle will carry a mode V/u linear transponder and 1200 baud BPSK beacon similar to RadFXsat-2. The satellite will demonstrate plasma propulsion and high gain telemetry in advance of a larger cubesat lunar mission.

RadFXsat-2 receives IARU frequency coordination

RadFXSat-2 is a 1U cubesat technology demonstration mission from Vanderbilt University that has been accepted for launch as part of NASA’s CubeSat Launch Initiative. Vanderbilt University is partnered with AMSAT, who will provide the satellite and communications for the experiments onboard as part of the AMSAT Fox program.

AMSAT recently received IARU frequency coordination for a 1200 baud BPSK telemetry downlink beacon on 435.750 MHz, and a mode V/u inverting transponder with an uplink of 145.860-145.890 MHz and a downlink of 435.760-435.790 MHz.

RadFXSat-2 is currently manifested as part of the ELaNA XX mission, scheduled for no earlier than December 2017, on a Virgin Galactic Launcher One, from Mojave, California. Other satellites on the mission include:

First amateur radio geosynchronous satellite to launch in 2017

It was recently announced that researchers at the Ted and Karyn Hume Center for National Security and Technology, part of Virginia Tech University are preparing to send an amateur radio transponder into a geosynchronous orbit in 2017.

Seven days a week, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, a new ham band will be available for the Americas,” said Robert McGwier, N4HY, a research professor in the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Hume Center’s director of research. This would be the first amateur radio payload in a geosynchronous orbit, and would significantly enhance communications capabilities for amateur radio operators, in particular following natural disasters or other emergency situations.

Amateurs have, of course, been communicating via satellite for decades. The first Orbiting Satellites Carrying Amateur Radio, or OSCAR, satellites were launched in the 1960s. Until now, however, these satellites have been in low Earth orbit (LEO), and were only available for short times when they happened to be overhead.

A geosynchronous satellite, however, would be accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A geosynchronous orbit has the same period as the Earth’s rotation — just under 24 hours. That makes them easy to locate and access, as they are almost always in the same spot in the sky. In this case, the satellite will always be within a band of longitudes over the Americas, continually accessible to any amateur radio operator there, including the students and researchers at the Virginia Tech Ground Station.

One expected application is emergency communications. This satellite will allow amateur radio operators to help emergency personnel reliably access supplies, logistical support, and medical assistance. They key is to ensure that the satellite would always be accessible to the radio operators — which is why the geosynchronous orbit is critical.

The satellite itself will be operated by Millennium Space Systems on behalf of the United States Air Force; the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation, also known as AMSAT, will operate the radio, which will be designed and built by Virginia Tech students — making this project a unique collaboration among the university, nonprofit organizations, private companies, and the federal government.

The Hume Center team is also engineering a ground terminal that emergency personnel could use to relay their own existing communications channels through the satellite. This setup could be deployed through the American Radio Relay League and the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation as a key part of a robust national emergency response system, allowing trained operators to reliably mobilize to disaster areas in the first critical hours after a devastating event.

Questions. I have questions.

I’ve taken most of this information from a press release on the Virginia Tech website. The press release raises nearly as many questions as it answers. For example:
  • What can I and other amateur radio operators do to support this effort?
  • What frequencies will this satellite use?
  • Will amateurs like you and me be able to build their own equipment to access this satellite?
  • If so, what kind of equipment will amateur radio operators need to communicate via this satellite?
I’ve e-mailed N4HY with these questions. I’ll follow up on this story when I have the answers. This will be an amazing addition to amateur radio, and I’m looking forward to it.

Ballots will be mailed to the AMSAT-NA membership by July 15, 2016 and must be received at the AMSAT office by September 15, 2016 in order to be counted. Those sent outside North America will go by air mail. If you have not received your ballot package in a reasonable time for your location, please contact the AMSAT office. ISRO PSLV-C34 will Launch 20 Satellites from Space Centre at Andhra Pradesh
June 22
 
The Indian Space Agency has announced that it would be launching twenty
satellites from its Sriharikota barrier Island base off the southeast coast
on June 22.
 
According to the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), the Indian rocket Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) will lift off from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh with 20 satellites at 9.25 am that day. While the rocket's main cargo will be India?s 725.5 kg Cartosat-2 series satellite for earth observation, the other 19 satellites weighing around 560 kg are from Canada, Germany, Indonesia and the United States as well as one satellite each from Sathyabama University, Chennai, and the College of Engineering, Pune, said the Indiatoday.in report.
 
The satellites will be launched from the second launch pad with a total payload of 1,288 kg. The whole mission will take approximately 26 minutes for its completion. The images sent by the Cartosat satellite will be useful for cartographic, urban, rural, coastal land use, water distribution and other applications. The Cartosat series of satellites was originated in India and is a part of Indian Remote Sensing Program.
 
According to Indiatoday.in, the Swayam satellite weighing 1kg from Pune will provide point-to-point messaging services to the HAM radio community. HAM Radio, or Amateur Radio, is a popular service that brings people, electronics and communication together. People use ham radio to talk across town, around the world, or even into space, all without the Internet or mobile phones.
 
The 1.5 kg Sathyabamasat from Sathyabama University will collect data on greenhouse gases.

Data Modes on Ham Radio Satellites
 
Tony Bombardiere, K2MO has released a video showing operation of PSK31, PSK63, and Hellshreiber on the amateur radio satellites.
 
He demonstrates WinPSK and IZ8BLY?s Hellschreiber which both have satellite
capabilities. Essentially, the applications make it easy for the operator to monitor digital signals on the satellites downlink while simultaneously transmitting on the satellites uplink; it?s accomplished by utilizing the sound cards full-duplex operation.

LibreCube Initiative Invites Comments on CubeSat PC Board Standardization
 
On June 16 Cubesat.org announced on their cubesat@cubesat.org e-mail list that the LibreCube Initiative, a community-driven initiative to provide open source solutions for space and earth exploration, is seeking input to formalize the mechanical specification of the stacked PC/104 circuit boards utilized in most CubeSat designs.

Special Event Station K1D to Operate Satellites on Field Day 2016
 
Field Day is always the fourth full weekend of June, beginning at 1800 UTC Saturday and running through 2059 UTC Sunday. Field Day 2016 is June 25-26. In an effort to encourage more kids and their families to get involved in the hobby, the kids at Ham Radio (dot) World are working to put an all-kids Special Event ARRL Field Day station on the air in 2016. This station will have the special event call sign of K1D and it will be set-up, operated, and put away by kids who are ham radio operators.  Kids of all ages and their parents (both licensed hams and non-hams alike) are encouraged to come out and participate in this exciting event.  New hams and even non-hams can
experience the excitement of talking to people around the world with the Get On the Air (GOTA) station, which will have the callsign K4G. Both  stations will operate from grid EL99IA in Deland, Florida, USA.
 
The kids will be on the HF bands and on the Amateur Radio satellites. 

K1D will be joined by AMSAT?s Vice-President Operations, Drew Glasbrenner, KO4MA, who will be a kid-for-a-day to help get the kids on the linear satellites.  Look
for them and give them a shout!
 
The K1D Special Event Field Day station will be built by the kids prior to the Field Day activities.  The kids have built a solar power solution "from scratch" to use to power their K1D Special Event Field Day station. Kyocera Solar and West Mountain Radio have graciously donated parts to this solar power supply ? THANK YOU!  They also plan on using a Genasun MPPT Charge Controller to manage charging the battery.  Emmett of Radiowavz.com is providing a Sentinel Expedition Hex Beam for K1D. Finally, the kids have built their own W7FG True Ladder Line antenna with parts provided by TrueLadderLine.com and are building additional antennas to use for Field Day.  Keep watching Ham Radio (dot) World for videos of the kids as they
build their Special Event Station.

TXFactor produced a documentary about the ARISS program?s interface with Tim Peake's Principia Mission. The documentary describes the process UK schools undertook to apply for a scheduled radio interview with Peake, and preparations for the contact opportunity by the King?s School in Devon. It details the station set up by the ARISS UK Operations team which accomplished successful radio contacts between 10 UK schools during Peake's Principia endeavor. Seven of these ten contacts included the reception of HamTV signals both at the school (using a mobile based ATV reception facility) and a 3.8m dish located at the Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station.

NASA Astronaut Scott Tingle Earns Amateur Radio License, KG5NZA
 
NASA Astronaut Scott Tingle Earns Amateur Radio License. He is now the owner
of call sign KG5NZA and will support ARISS on upcoming ISS Expeditions 53
and 54.
 
NASA Astronaut Scott D. Tingle has just earned his Amateur Radio license, passing his exam on June 3, 2016. The FCC issued the call sign, KG5NZA, to him on June 8.  In January, as he began some NASA training in Russia he requested the license study material.  He had heard about ARISS during his astronaut training, and in January, decided to study on his own. The astronaut training program runs for at least two years, is intense, and heavily loaded with all types of required studies, and Amateur Radio is
optional.  Tingle earned his technician license and plans to use it to support ARISS during his scheduled time on the International Space Station as part of the Expedition 53 crew.  Launch is tentatively planned for fall of 2017.  His stay continues into Expedition 54.
 
Tingle graduated from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, in 1988 with a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in fluid mechanics and propulsion.  A captain in the United States Navy, he has  served as a combat pilot in Iraq and Afghanistan and has earned copious awards and commendations. He was selected for the astronaut program in 2009 as one of 14 members of NASA Astronaut Group 20, and graduated in 2011.

Bouze Island is one of the Ieshima small Islands which are located in the Seto Inland sea of Hyogo Prefecture in Japan. There are about 1400 people on the island and are part of the marine products industry. They live with simplicity and are friendly.  But the students of this Island have not had a chance for scientific experience as part of their school education because of their remote location. There are 140 persons in the elementary school and 100 persons in the junior high school.

ARISSat-1 Finally Deployed from ISS

After a delay of almost four hours, cosmonauts Sergei Volkov, RU3DIS, and Alexander Samokutyaev, successfully deployed Amateur Radio's newest satellite: ARISSat-1/KEDR. The deployment -- originally scheduled to occur at 1457 UTC on Wednesday, August 3 --
was delayed due to antenna concerns.

According to US Mission Control in Houston, ARISSat-1 was supposed to have two antennas -- one 70 cm antenna and one 2 meter antenna -- but Volkov and Samokutyaev expressed concern when they saw only one antenna. After discussions between the cosmonauts, the payload manager and the ground teams in Houston and Moscow, it was decided to delay the deployment. At the time, it was uncertain if the satellite would even be deployed during this spacewalk. If ARISSat-1 was not deployed during today's spacewalk, the next opportunity for its deployment would be February 2012. "Instead of taking chances on the satellite not working properly once deployed, it has been decided to secure it for the time being," US Mission Control reported when the decision to delay was made.

After much consultation, Mission Control in Moscow told the cosmonauts that they were going to go ahead and deploy the satellite. At 1843 UTC, Volkov jettisoned ARISSat-1 from his position on the Pirs docking compartment on the ISS.

The loss of the UHF antenna means that the 435 MHz/145 MHz linear transponder may not be operational. According to US Mission Control, it can also mean that there may be loss in the data that can be downloaded from ARISSat-1, as well as a loss of control capability from the ground. Even so, radio amateurs will be able to copy voice, BPSK and SSTV messages.

According to ARISSat-1/KEDR Project Manager Gould Smith, WA4SXM, ARISSat-1 will be in high power mode (continuous transmission) when in the Sun. It will go into low power (intermittent) mode when in eclipse.

ARISSat-1 will be active on the following frequencies and modes:

* 145.950 MHz FM Downlink: FM transmissions will cycle between a voice ID as RS01S, select telemetry values, 24 international greeting messages in 15 languages, as well as SSTV images. If you successfully receive the SSTV transmissions, you are invited to upload your picture to the ARISS SSTV Gallery at, http://www.amsat.org/amsat/ariss/SSTV/.

* 435 MHz - 145 MHz Linear Transponder: The linear transponder will operate in Mode U/V (70 cm up, 2 meters down). It is a 16 kHz wide inverting passband and the convention will be to transmit LSB on the 435 MHz uplink and receive USB on the 145 MHz downlink.

* 145.919 MHz/145.939 MHz CW Beacons: The CW transmissions will be call sign ID RS01S, select telemetry and call signs of people actively involved with the ARISS program.

* 145.920 MHz SSB BPSK-1000 Telemetry: The BPSK transmissions will feature a new 1kBPSK protocol developed by Phil Karn, KA9Q. When the CW2 beacon on 145.919 MHz is active, this indicates that the BPSK-1000 format is being transmitted. If the CW1 beacon on 145.939 MHz is active, the backup of BPSK-400 format is being transmitted.

AMSAT needs your telemetry from ARISSat-1/KEDR after deployment from the International Space Station. Since there are no "Whole Orbit Data" storage mechanisms onboard ARISSat-1/KEDR, listener submissions are the only way for AMSAT to collect the spacecraft telemetry and KURSK experiment results. Here's how you can help:

* Recorded ARISSat-1/KEDR and Kursk telemetry CSV files (in the ARISSatTLM folder) can be sent as via e-mail as an attachment to, telemetry@arissattlm.org.

* If you are running ARISSatTLM and receiving the signal "live" from ARISSat-1/KEDR, please enable the telemetry forwarding option.

* The latest telemetry can be seen live on your computer or cell phone at, http://www.arissattlm.org/mobile.

AMSAT has also posted an ARISSat-1/KEDR "How To" page on their
website with pointers concerning digital aspects, such as BPSK
telemetry reception, SSTV reception and more. The web site is,

On this spacewalk, Volkov and Samokutyaev also installed laser
communications equipment and replaced experiments on the Zvezda
service module and retrieved a rendezvous antenna. They were unable
to perform the major job of the spacewalk -- relocating a boom
structure to aid future spacewalks -- due to time constraints. This
spacewalk was the third for Volkov, who performed two spacewalks as
Expedition 17 commander in 2008. This was the first spacewalk for
Samokutyaev.

On January 28 at 0132 UTC,a Soyuz rocket lifted off from Kazakhstan carrying the Russian Progress M-09M cargo vehicle to orbit headed for the International Space Station (ISS).

While the primary cargo of the Progress vehicle is fuel, oxygen, food and other supplies, the Progress also contains AMSAT's ARISSat-1 Amateur Radio satellite.

Progress docked with the space station just two days after launch, on January 30 at 0239 UTC.

Currently ARISSat-1 is planned to be manually deployed from the ISS by Russian cosmonauts Dmitry Kondratyev and Oleg Skripochka during a spacewalk on February 16. ARISSat-1/RadioSkaf V will have simultaneous 2m FM, CW, BPSK and transponder transmissions. These multiple transmissions are created by a new software defined transponder (SDX) board. Features provided by the SDX include:

* The FM transmissions with cycle between a voice ID, select telemetry values, 24 international greeting messages in 15 languages and live SSTVimages.

* The CW transmissions will be callsign ID, select telemetry, and callsigns of people actively involved with the ARISS program.

* The BPSK transmissions will feature a new 1kBPSK protocol developed by Phil Karn, KA9Q to be readable in low signal level conditions. The BPSK data will alternate betwen telemetry and Kursk experiment data. Free ground station soundcard demodulator and display software will be available before deployment for multiple platforms.

* There also is a 16kHz wide amateur radio U/V transponder between the BPSK
and FM signals.

* The Kursk experiment will be sampling the amount of vacuum each day for 90 minutes and sending down data to map the vacuum change as the satellite slowly spirals into the atmosphere.
