A Slow Scan TV (SSTV) CubeSat developed by students at Saint Thomas

from the International Space Station between 1400 and 1500 UT on May

STM is thought to be the first Elementary school to build their own
satellite, even Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and First Grade
students were involved in the project.

Middle School Students took the initiative to begin exploring how to
receive data from the CubeSat and formed a Ham Radio Club. There,
they learned the basics of operating a ham radio station and explored
Slow Scan Television as an option for receiving images once the

The tenth annual joint AMSAT/TAPR Banquet will be held on Friday
evening, May 20th. This dinner is one of the main AMSAT activities

The Argentinian earth observation satellite ÑuSat-1 will carry a
linear transponder built by AMSAT Argentina. The satellite is
scheduled to launch on a CZ-4B rocket from Taiyuan Satellite Launch
Center in China on May 30, 2016 into a 500 km sun-synchronous orbit
with an inclination of 97.5 degrees and a Local Time of the Ascending
Node (LTAN) of 10:30.

CY9C DXpedition to St. Paul Island Announces Satellite Operation
The CY9C DXpedition to St. Paul Island, scheduled for August 19, 2016
– August 29, 2016, has announced that Lee Imber, WW2DX, has joined the
DXpedition team and will add satellite operations, as well as 2 meter
EME and 6 meter operations, to the DXpedition plans.

A new toy has arrived here at the radio ranch!
Will this is an interesting new day here on the radio ranch in western NC. My new Uniden BCD436HP has arrived and I've given it a brief tour before I start digging in. Got the Sentinel software installed, firmware and database updated, and the basic settings updated.
Now it is time to dig into what is being loaded from RadioRef (I can see that needs a lot of work as usual) and set up some other local stuff. Will spend some extra time learning the insides for sure as this beauty does a lot.
Thinking about swapping the 4gb for a 32gb, might as well give it max smoke. Also needs to see if I can knock down some of the stuff in that RRR db that I will never use here in the east (i.e. no Canada, west coast etc).

FAA to Begin Decommissioning VORs This Year
As part of the NextGen initiative to adopt a Performance Based Navigation (PBN) airway structure supported by GPS, the FAA is moving forward with plans to decommission approximately 30% of currently operating domestic VORs over the next 10 years.
The VORs left behind will constitute a minimum operational network, intended to support conventional navigation in the event of a GPS outage, while not tying up resources maintaining unnecessary and underused VORs.
The decommission process will take place in two phases, with the first phase lasting from 2016 to 2020, and the second phase lasting from 2021 to 2025.
Although the FAA has not released specific dates for when each VOR will be decommissioned, they have provided a list of the first 35 VORs that have been approved for decommissioning, and in what phase of the project each will be removed.
That list is available in pdf format here.
For instance, our local HRS VORTAC in Young Harris is slated to be decommissioned in Phase 2. That particular VORTAC surprises me.
The removal of these VORs will have a large effect on the domestic airway structure and instrument procedures at many airports.
And if I may be allowed a bit of editorial license, staking our entire aero nav structure on a space based system given the current international environment we live in is just plain, well -- stupid.
Both China and the Russia have and are working on anti-satellite weapons aka satellite killers. While we may have a lot of GPS sats in orbit, start taking them out and the GPS system will be degraded. At what point would DoD turn off the civilian side and leave all those users out in a lurch. In today's environment I would not be comfortable with that thought.

HAMS WITH HEARTS ---> The International DX Association has announced the
formation of a new fund within INDEXA that specifically supports
humanitarian projects carried out by DXpeditions. The generous initial
contribution by Zorro Miazawa (JH1AJT) will enable INDEXA to begin
humanitarian support grants beginning mid-January of 2016. The tag line for
this fund is "Hams with Hearts". To qualify for humanitarian grants,
DXpeditions must present a clear plan for a humanitarian project to
coincide with their DXpedition. The project must provide direct, physical

official NPS administrative units and affiliated areas across the US. The
program will have two participation tracks (Chasers and Activators) and

UA2FM (RI1FJ's QSL manager) has been able to understand is that Eugene "is
alive and well, he carries out his duties, but he has no technical

you did not receive a reply to an inquiry please send only one e-mail to

- Several "Not in Log" call signs were reported to be found in the logs of
other DXpeditions or a Cuban Special Event station that were active at the
same time as TX3X.
- The complete log will be uploaded to LoTW in May 2016.
- Individuals that donated to the project at any time - your LoTW was
uploaded.
- OQRS PayPal requests are processed daily, please allow 24-48 hours for
LoTW upload.
- If you made a donation or processed an OQRS using PayPal and are missing

December in a 9-hour shootout in Afghanistan. He was 48 and the father of
